The U.S., a wretched hive of scum and villainy.
The nation accused of aiding the killings in Darfur provides spies in Iraq.

WASHINGTON — Sudan has secretly worked with the CIA to spy on the insurgency in Iraq, an example of how the U.S. has continued to cooperate with the Sudanese regime even while condemning its suspected role in the killing of tens of thousands of civilians in Darfur.

President Bush has denounced the killings in Sudan's western region as genocide and has imposed sanctions on the government in Khartoum. But some critics say the administration has soft-pedaled the sanctions to preserve its extensive intelligence collaboration with Sudan.

The relationship underscores the complex realities of the post-Sept. 11 world, in which the United States has relied heavily on intelligence and military cooperation from countries, including Sudan and Uzbekistan, that are considered pariah states for their records on human rights.

And at a time when Sudan is being condemned in the international community, its counter-terrorism work has won precious praise. The U.S. State Department recently issued a report calling Sudan a "strong partner in the war on terror."

Yes, of course, it's not important that thousands of people are killed, as long as our "partner" provides us with intelligence. And intelligence (of another sort) is what's sorely lacking in Washington.

The next time a Darfur refugee begs for help, please explain to them that our "partnership" is more important than their suffering.

I know you've made a name for yourself with stupid posts (and something to do with goats which I'd just as soon remain ignorant of), but nothing about your quote suggests that we do not or will not apply pressure on Sudan regarding Darfur in order to get assistance on other issues. Your conclusion is wholely unsupported.

Yes indeed, Shemp, the world is more than one dimensional, as are the players in it.

Surprised?

The last cock block on UN action in Sudan came from a UNSC member called China. They do a lot of business in the Sudan, and don't pester the government about little moral things like supporting genocide. The last cock block to sanctions against Burma, in a similar theme, which the US supported, came from both Russia and China, UNSC members, back in January.

To misquote dear old, fired Rummy: In the real world, you work with the allies you find, not with the allies you wish you had. ;) Politics makes strange bedfellows, doesn't it? If they have what you want, you need to cut a deal. Ya know, a "deal" deal. (Crapgame, Kelly's Heroes)

About ten years ago, the US sent Tomahawks into the Sudan to blow up a medicine/chem weapons factory. Ten years later, we ask them for help in Iraq.

Welcome to the Real World. What irritates me is that, in Washington, they can't seem to keep their OPSEC working, nor their mouths shut, at all.

Idiots.
