U.S. House kills gun proposal

The National Rifle Association and its allies in the U.S. House of Representatives beat back an effort yesterday to restrict exports of high-powered .50-calibre rifles that can bring down jet airliners from more than a kilometre away.

Can a .50 calibre rifle bring down a jet airliner? If it can, isn't defeating this ban kind of dumb? What is a .50-calibre rifle good for and why would a civilian need one?

Anything's possible, but most AA guns feature either a ridiculously high rate of fire (Vulcan), or multiple slaved barrels (Wirbelwind).

The US Army has the .50 Caliber M2HB Machine Gun, which can be mounted atop humm-vees, trucks, APC's and tanks, and is designed to be fired against both ground and air targets. Good luck taking down a "fast-mover", however.

To answer the first part of your question: big-game hunting, target practice, competition shooting, sniping.

To answer the second part: demonstrating "need" is not a requirement for ownership.

Why would a civillian need a gun for sniping?

Any firearm can be used for sniping, any one at all. Any hunting rifle with a scope would be particularly good.

"Sniping" is simply becoming a feebleminded loaded term on the part of anti gun nuts.

Uppity Danes, that's why. You have no idea how they can affect your property values. But levity aside, you know bloody well that's a BS question, unless you've forgotten all the 2nd amendment discussions you've had this year.

Either that, or you just weren't listening, in which case the uppity Danes theory is as good as any.

I wasn't the one bringing up sniping.

A sniper needs accuracy over a long distance. Want to persuade me that a Magnum is good for sniping?

Where, in the 2nd Amendment, does it say anything about sniping?

And if you could save the xenophobia for your lavatory visits, it would be most productive for this discussion.

A what? Do you have any idea what a "magnum" is?

If you can't think of any reasons/scenarios on your own, explaining it to you would probably be a waste of time.

Why would the NRA care about restricting exports of a weapon? The measure, as reported in that link, would have done nothing to restrict possession or sale within the US. Does the American gun lobby really want foreigners to enjoy the same quality and quantity of guns as Americans? Why?

Spreading freedom around the world one bullet at a time...wait that doesn't sound right, I'll come back to you on that one.

That's the general idea, when you go sniping.

You are not going to argue that you, as a civilian, would need this gun to snipe someone, only to wound him?

Well I don't know about you but when I go shooting -- not often and I haven't had a chance to use a .50, yet -- I don't shoot at live targets, especially people.

I do and I couldn't do without my .51 (that's .01 higher than a .50)

Who could any person, as a civillian, legally kill at a distance?
