There are a few channels on my cable system that have surgery programs. Some are about cosmetic surgery and some about other kinds. It strikes me completely absurd that when they do a surgery where a breast is exposed they feel compelled to blur out the nipple. You are free to look into somebodies guts or at their breast tissue with the skin torn away, but god forbid yousee their nipple. I really don't think you can get more intimate with a person than looking into their guts. In fact, in one show they wanted to preserve the nipple for reattachment to the reconstructed breast so they cut away the nipple but left it attached to the skin above it and moved it over to the side. The nipple was not even attached to the breast, but still they felt it neccessary to blur it out. This has something to do with morality????

No, it has something to do with the idiots at the FCC and/OR permissions granted by the patient.

It is a funny observation, nonetheless.

I was watching a show that follows plastic surgeons and shows quite a few women going in for breast augmentation and the nipples are always blurred, eventhough the blood and gore aren't.

One time I was watching it, a transvestite was getting his final surgery where his genitals were being removed. He had already undergone hormone therapy and had breasts implanted, so he almost looked like a woman. In one scene, he was completely nude, breasts showing and all, and his/her nipples weren't blurred. I found this to be pretty funny because apparently there must have been a discussion with the producers about it.

I've seen that before, as fx's Nip/Tuck showed a man who had breast implants put in to write a book about being a woman in full frontal nudity. It was a guest actor, the guy used to be the psychologist on SVU...

On the 'Miami Ink' series I have seen people in the tatoo parlor with naked women tattoos. The nipples have been fuzzied on the tattoos. Are these people insane? Do they not realise that hiding something makes you want to see it more?. Got to dash- I'm going nipple surfing.

I once saw a show where they blurred out a fat man's breasts, damned if I can remember which one now.

As a Chicagoan you might remember when murderer Richard Speck was shown on the evening news in prison there they fuzzed out his "boobs."

If you give men the right hormones they pretty much behave the same way as ladies' breasts. It's not like the genitals where the actual plumbing is different.

FX is probably allowed to show nipples, they just don't. Stuff that's broadcast over the airwaves is not allowed. Who knows where people come up with these ideas, but that's the way it is.

If it's on cable (ie, not broadcast for free over the airwaves) then the FCC doesn't regulate it so it's the cable network's choice to censor (usually to appease to advertisers.)

of course, patients' permission is still an issue

I’ve been pondering this, too.

If you show pubic hair in a movie, you’re in danger of getting an NC-17 rating (which all but scuttles your film). If you show half-undressed, horribly mangled corpses in lovingly rendered detail complete with close-ups, you’ve got a string of hit prime-time broadcast tv shows.

I’m wondering if this is more typical of religious oriented societies. If not, where does it come from?

About 15 years ago I was living in the Netherlands. That was when they released Terminator 2, which I saw in the theaters, full violence and all.

Later on, when they showed it on TV, they cut out certain violent parts like when he shoves the guy (once in the parking garage and once in the hospital just when Arnie meets up with Linda) and the guy slams, crack! into something hard. That's quite intense the first time you see it.

Yet Dutch TV had no problem showing full frontal nudity of men on Sunday afternoons.

Boy are they screwed up over there!

I am hooked on the surgery shows. I saw something much sillier on one of them.

On one show a male to female transexual was getting fake breasts, and a female to male transexual was having their breasts removed. well, on the biological man getting breast implants they decided to blur the nipple after the final stitch on it, and vice versa. i hope it made everyone in standards and practices feel stupid, because its really an example of how stupid the censorship is.
