I was going through my latest copy of the Seismological Research Letters and on the back is the section known as the "Electronic Seismologist" In one of the sections, they were reporting on the latest update on some software to turn you MacBook or MacBook Pro into a seismometer. The original software (SeisMac) has been around for a couple of years but I've never had the right laptop to apply the software to. So if you want to download the software and try it yourself:

What the software does is take advantage of the accelerometer that's in your laptop.

Sorry PC dudes, there's no similar software to take advantage of the same hardware built into your laptops but as the article said, someone with the know-how just needs to get around to do it.

Enjoy!

Hey!

April first is coming up soon. How about we all start running this program at lunch time then when the clock reaches noon, start pounding the table for five minutes, then head over to the geology forums and look for all the comments.

A seismometer is a wave amplitude measuring device, essentially a damped, linear pendulum; an accelerometer is a slightly different animal. Reading the title of the OP, I thought maybe they were going to suggest drilling a small hole through the case at one corner, then take a string...

Now, it seems, I have two reasons to buy a Mac. Crazy!

Wowbagger, I don't know if you're still considering it, but if you don't have a problem with refurbs then these guys are pretty good deals, particularly this Mini or this MacBook offering. Like I said, they're refurbs, which means a lower warranty, but the prices are nice.
