I don't want to come across as a big meany, spoiling other people's fun, but I find animated avatars really really annoying. Why do they do it??

Anyway, I found a solution which doesn't require me to hit people with sticks. Just press 'Esc' (once the page has loaded) and the animations will stop.

This may also work in other browsers, I haven't tested it.

:-)

You mean why do the avatars do it? Because they have more than one frame.

Or did you mean "why do you do it?"

Unless you thought that somehow magically only people without animated avatars would read this thread?

Mac users with Camino can set a setting to play animations once, then stop. I set this more for ads than avatars.

of course my avatar is currently animated because it entertains me.

instructions i stole from another web site for disabling animations in firefox:
1. In a blank tab’s address bar, type about:config to display the configuration settings.
2. In the Filter field, type image. to search for the image configuration options.
3. Double-click the image.animation_mode entry.
4. In the Enter String Value dialog box, change ‘normal’ to ‘none’.
5. Click OK.

I've considered changing mine, but some people said they like it, so it stays for now.

Even so, I'm sometimes distracted by it when re-reading my own posts!
