Tookie Williams: clemency denied

HORRRRRAAAAAAAY!

I'm not a fan of the death penalty, but that bastard was as bad as it gets. The harshest sentance possible was the only one appropriate.

The world will be no poorer for his passing, despite what his groupies, hangers-on and attention-whores say.

Now if someone will finally getting around to frying Mumia I can start to oppose the death penalty.

The "save Tookie" front is a transparent sham. Even if good works WERE an excuse to dodge the needle, how much good could he do with sales like these?

His top seller, "Gangs and Violence" has sold 330 books. Another book "Gangs and Wanting to Belong" sold exactly two copies. No one is reading his books, least of all his two sons, one of whom is serving time in San Quentin. The other was just arrested on charges of aggravated rape.

The whole thing is a cynical ploy to dodge justice. I'm glad it failed.

There will always be more Mumia's....

Personally I'll never oppose the death penalty while guys like Thomas Capano are walking the earth.

I think it's unfortunate that someone is going to be forcibly put to death tonight. But you knew that.

So that Cleon doesn't feel alone amongst the crows, I agree with him.

They're not trying to save Tookie for his own sake, or even for society. They're doing it for themselves. They just want to look tougher by hanging around the tough guy. "Hey look at me, aren't I cool? I'm bessie mates with the founder of the crips. Aren't I a gangsta? SAVE TOOKIE!"

If there's one thing I could change about people, it's their inability to satisfactorily distinguish between fantasy and reality. That a thug like Williams can be a hero to so many isn't the fault of the Grand Theft Auto games, The Warriors movie or rappers like 50cent and Ice-T (which places none of them above criticism). It's because people lack the empathy to realise that real gangstas hurt real people. People like them.

Of course, if I ever got my wish Randi would be out of a job, but I'm sure we could have a whip-round and treat him to a new magic wand and cape :D

Sure, it's unfortunate. But it's only 25% as unfortunate as the four murders that put him in that position, IMHO. Maybe slightly less, since he alone had the power to avoid the whole question in the first place.

I don't celebrate an execution, but I will celebrate the fulfillment of justice, in whatever form.

That's a great piece of mind-reading. Are you going to apply for the million?

Tookie cold bloodedly murdered four innocent people. I don't care how nice a guy he became behind bars, he deserves the harshest possible punishment society can dole out for what he did. I, for one, do not mourn his passing.

I agree with you guys too. I think the whole situation, and all the people who are dead because of it, is unfortunate.

I wasn't aware that the value of human life could be so coldly calculated. I oppose the death penalty. I'm not saying that Tookie is innocent of the crime he's been convicted of, but no one should be killed for their crimes.

I know Williams was convicted of gunning down four people. He claims he didn't do it which is why he said he'd never apologize. The D.A. association says the evidence against him was overwhelming. Does anyone know what that evidence is? It seems to me Mr. Williams only hope would to be to demonstrate that the punishment doesn't fit the crime.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney's office recapitulates the case against Mr. Williams and adds some comments in their response to his clemency petition, here . (57 page .pdf file)

Well, would you say the deaths of four innocent people by murder is:

A. More unfortunate
B. About as unfortunate
C. Less unfortunate

...than the execution of a convicted murderer who has had access to his full due process rights?

As to whether any crime is heinous enough to merit a penalty as severe as death, well, that's something I think people of good conscience can disagree on... but the point you responded to didn't really involve that.

That hits pretty damn close to home.

BTW, I formally apologise and retract any critisism that I may have leveled on your joke telling abilities. I told what I thought was a real thigh-slapper to Freak and I had to explain it in detail. He blamed himself but it didn't fool me.
