Hi I have been reading about Temporal Lobe Epilepsy and the paranormal...Now I am very upset I have epilepsy and no nothing paranormal has at my apartment..Just paramedic..I have a site on Youtube and Facebook also on Twitter where I talk to others about epilepsy.

Its "Scientific Research" (if you can say tht with a straight face and not laugh) Is what I am working against. I talk about epilepsy on my Youtube channel to get rid of myths about epilepsy.
Myths like:
You cannot swallow your tongue during a seizure. It is physically impossible. I am sure though we all know someone we wish would swallow their tongue just to shut them up.

NO not all seizures involve falling on the ground shaking violently like a fish out of water.

No people with epilepsy are not mentally ill , it is a neurological disorder not psychologica

And many more myths like this But these sites talking about epilepsy and the paranormal are just run by scientists who got their degrees from mailing Cracker Jack box tops.

It puts us back into the to the archaic mind set that people with epilepsy are prophets. Like I said on Mr. Randi's youtube channel "i could make a profit being a profit"

Which sites regarding TLE and the paranormal are you referring to, and what are they suggesting? Is is just research showing that TLE might be responsible for some people having experinces that seem to be paranormal, or are there other sites claiming more than this?

If you post broken links (eg with spaces in them etc), we can fix them for you, as you don't have enough posts to put live links in yet.

Nice big-ass font! Welcome to the forum!

I have a seizure disorder that is basically the same thing as Gran Mal seizures. The whole shake/flop/piss yourself/chew up tongue kind.

For the 45 or so seconds before I have a seizure, I see people that aren't there, hear music that isn't playing, see scenes I'm not a part of (like being inside a moving subway car), smell cakes baking...

Especially for the people standing next to me and the music, I try to consciously implant who the persons were and what the song was... always failing to recall the details because of the post-dictal state. For fifteen hours or so after the episode, I can hardly walk or tell up from down. Mostly I have to sleep and take it really easy.

Do you have any questions for input by other posters? BTW, you wanna change "can" to "cannot" swallow your tongue.

Also, for other posters, I will add, "Don't try to force a seizing person's mouth open or insert anything into their mouth. Clear the area around their head of objects (table or chair legs) and try to note how long they are convulsing."

Well , I attribute all the sights and smells to seizures, I have gran mal myself but my seizures have taken a vacation for the past 14 months , coming up on 15 months in a few days. I admit I have had some funky hallucinations during a seizure. and thats all they are. Hallucinations. Smelling food, hearing high pitched tones ringing in my ears the auras . I was born with epilepsy and have lived with it for 41 years.

I have two sayings about epilepsy "I do not suffer from epilepsy I survive it" and "I have epilepsy but epilepsy does not have me"

It figures I cant find the site now , but there is one "psychic" site Mindreality dot com
it refers to ESP , I am sorry I cannot find the site now but I will look and try to find it again.

The vast majority of my days are seizure free, so I don't dwell on it much.

People who don't experience them don't know how close to crazy it must look from the other side. It's no wonder they were drilling holes in our heads to let the demons out. Thankfully we have modern medicine. I take Keppra and Dilantin in huge doses every day. I hated Phenobarb. Didn't think Tegretol worked too well for me...

One more thing about my gran mal seizures , during a gran mal seizure an alien does not immediately pop of my chest as portrayed in the Movie Alien....That takes about 3 minutes to happen so you still have time to run...(yes I joke about my epilepsy I would rather laugh with others instead of cry alone)

Oo! Oo! Oo! (call on me, call on me!) (Maia jumps up and down!)

Ahem, anyway. I'm JUST about to post about this in the "New Explanation for the Paranormal" thread! There are tons and tons of studies in peer-reviewed journals on this very topic. :) That is, the topic of TLE and "paranormal" experiences, particularly people who have complex partial seizures. Oh, so very many studies... To find just a few, go to this really excellent gold-standard site run by NIH and the U.S. National Library of Medicine and type in epilepsy AND paranormal. :)

Ugh. There's nothing paranormal about having epilepsy.

It sucks in a supernormal way, however.

I have done so much research on epilepsy and some of the ancient cures and remedies are just...icky for the lack of a better word.

Like , drinking urine from a shoe. drinking blood of a freshly slain spartan

Greeks believed that you got epilepsy from offending the greek godess Seline.
And the remedy or cure was this:

You had to go out at night , when the moon is farthest from the earth.
Pick mistletoe with a knife or sickle. It couldn't fall on the ground or it would not cure "falling sickness" since the misteltoe had itself fallen And the mistletoe had to be eaten.

Now this sounds like a sick joke, sending an epileptic person out in the dark with a sharp object to eat mistletoe .Which would make the epilepsy stop..along with breathing and living.

I give all the basic info on my videos about epilepsy on youtube..My videos are not the greatest but I am at least trying to help get rid of the nonsense believed about epilepsy..It makes me laugh everytime I am asked "How did you catch it?"

If there is a link between epilepsy and the paranormal...my powers are fading ...I have not had a seizure in close to 15 months...good riddance , epilepsy is a pain in the neck, head, tongue and every other extremity that is sore from spasming muscles

Dumbest things...

Once I was going to have a seizure, and since I was right near my bed, I lay down and pulled the covers on, then passed out and convulsed.

...the covers restrained my arms and legs and all my thrashing made enormous muscle tears where free limbs would've fared better.
