Those poor, oppressed Christians... NOT!

Apathy has always been a great enemy of religion.
Being persecuted implies your message has an impact.

If nobody cares one way or another about your message, people leave and/or stop giving you money. That's a bad thing.

I have two reactions to it. My first reaction is pretty straightforward: "What a bunch of whining p*ssies."

My second reaction is that I'm actually a bit concerned. As Kopji said above, if you claim you're being persecuted, the implication is that there's a reason for persecution in the first place. Of course, there is no reason for Christians to be persecuted, and in fact they're not.

I'm concerned that if this keeps up, we could see the delicate balance between church and state topple over. Christians are a huge majority in the USA, and using scare tactics like this have had nasty outcomes in the past.

But then again, I freely admit I'm always worried about the possibilities of theocracy. I'm a "theocrophobe," and the chances are pretty damn good that I'm being paranoid. :p

From the article:

So are we really seeing an unprecedented wave of hostility toward either Christmas or Christianity? Or is it, rather, that the waning of the cultural hegemony to which some Christians have come to feel entitled is perceived as an attack? Many of the most loudly trumpeted complaints in this vein are, after all, complaints about the absence of special treatment: no special spot for the Ten Commandments in the courthouse rotunda; no pride of place for Christmas among those happy winter holidays; no exceptions for the Christian charity.

I think it is the latter. Xians are just whining because they can no longer assume that the world agrees with them. They are finding that they actually have to justify their arguments.

It 'll do them good.

Re: Those poor, oppressed Christians-not

I think the Christian right-wingers have this paranoia about what America is becoming: a nation of Muslims, Hindus, secular humanists, Buddhists, and--gasp!--Catholics (all those people pouring over our southern border, you know). Not to mention the fact that Jews can now join any country club they want to, and gays might actually get some equal rights. What is this country coming to?

Since they've got their man in the White House and way more power than they ought to have for their relatively small numbers, they should just shut up about being an endangered species (though the thought of the fundamentalists' extinction does warm my heart). It's the rest of us who should be whining.

"The ACLU has twisted our laws and fellow vicious God Haters hate Christians and we will be the next target of the ACLU. Soon it will be a crime to be a christian and those God haters will help the government slaughter us. That day is just around the corner." --- Elizabeth_S, RaptureReady

I think the religiousies are getting panicked because they realize they're losing the cultural war against secular humanism.

Some people just can't wait to be persecuted.

Great article.

Be sure to click the "Easter Assignment" link about halfway through. It's unbelievable that this guy is still allowed to teach.

And my Fox News-watching mother was entirely full of the story about the poor oppressed teacher and how the ACLU is persecuting honest people. Funny that Fox News didn't tell the whole story....I'm beginning to suspect that they might be willfully omitting relevant facts in an attempt to spin the news in a certain way for the purpose of furthering some agenda! Nah, they'd never do that.

I am sick to death of people who claim Christians are being persecuted. Really? The Majority is being persecuted? How is that possible?

I think what they mean to say is PROSECUTED. Catholic priests, Baptist ministers.

But seriously - not allowing the Ten commandments on a government property is persecution? Please

Oh Dorian... you should know by now that any time someone says to the "righteous", "you shouldn't do that because it's forcing your beliefs on us..." they call it religious oppression? :hit:

God did (after all) give them the world to "do with as they pleased..." Well, that's just what they're doing... great job, eh? :p

Here is letter I emailed to fox News two days ago
It aint been opened

Dear Sean

I’m an atheist and a registered Democrat; before you start the mental name calling; I’m a law abiding citizen who believes in limited government, tax cuts, legal gun ownership and Washington getting out of the way so the citizens of this republic can make it a better one. I voted for GW in the last two elections and would do it again. Golly; I figure that makes me one of them conservatives.

But I just have to weigh in on this “Christians under attack” nonsense that Fox news is spouting lately; what a bunch of bull. We live in a country where you can’t get elected dog catcher unless you profess some form of religious devotion; the small town I live has dozens of churches. No church in this country has ever been burned to the ground by a group of rampaging Jesus haters; many have, by Christians in white sheets, however.

I seems that Christian belief and values are more at risk from within than from enemies on the outside. An ancient church that harbors pedophiles, fundamentalist ministers that use the murders committed by other fundamentalists on Sept 11 2001 to advance their own agenda of fear mongering; are only two examples. If a being like Jesus ever really existed, I’d think this would make him very sad.

Of course the lame brains that throw a hissy fit over Christmas carols in school or nativity scenes are being childish and selfish; these things are part of our social history and by being so, should be part of public life. I for one completely agree with the greatest American who ever lived, Thomas Jefferson, “Christianity is a myth” but it is a important part of our history and it should never be ignored.

Hey; here’s an idea, what if the religious community came up with a plan that allows teaching religious belief FAIRLY in public schools. I mean they could point out the fact that all religions, even the ones very different from the Jewish/Christian/Islamic trio; have almost identical moral guidelines; that would be a good start.

- Zod willing.

- The cycle here is this:

1. Some Christians are taught that they are a righteous minority in a world of evil. Humans, by their nature, ARE evil, and only Christians are exempt.

2. Because of #1, they expect to be 'hated'. If they're not, then they're not good Christians, because the evil people aren't mad at you. The people that hate you are, quite obviously, evil people who also hate god, blah blah blah.

3. Ergo, some Christians get it into their head that the more people get fed up and yell at them for being asinine, the better job they're doing and the righter they are. Witness: any number of fundies on the forums; RR is chock absolutely full of them. If you disagree with me, you're automatically an evil person, ergo I'm doing my god-given job.

- It's this cycle that makes honest and open debate with them a waste of time. Your time would be better spent trying to push golf clubs through your own head.

- Of course Christians play the victim card. It validates their beliefs to do so.

Christians have been playing the victim card for almost 2000 years so it’s no surprise that they are good at it.

Lately it seems there are more attempts to force xianity onto us all. When that happens & it runs afoul of the constitution and is rebuffed the xians see that as a secular attack on them. It is conveniently forgotten that it was they that attacked whilst the law only defended what was already there. The more attacks they make, the more rebuss, ergo the more ‘attacks’ they perceive.

It is also a source of amusement for me when people like Bill O’Reilly talk about the “Secularists” as if we are some vast organized group working together. Oh wait that’s them. The one main advantage xians and other religious groups have always had over atheists, agnostics & freethinkers (apart from that whole brainwashing from childhood thing) is that they ARE large organized groups while most non believers have never attended a meeting of like minded people in their life.

Ever notice when you question a xian on some aspects of their religion, even in a polite and genuinely curious way, after the first few difficult to answer questions the response is usually “Why are you attacking my religion/faith/belief?”

Apparently playing victim is bred into them as a defense mechanism.

"You don't like the Secularists?"
"No! Not with the persecution we have to put up with!"
"Persecution?"
"Religious persecution. We won't stand for it forever."
"I thought the Secularists let everybody worship as they pleased."
"That's just it! We Born-again are forced to stand around and watch Atheists and Muslims and Catholics and Jews going about their business unmolested, as if they owned the country. If that isn't persecution, I'd like to know what is!"

(Original by L. Sprague de Camp, Lest Darkness Fall)

If you can convince someone that their world and their way of life is under attack and that they dont have time to think things through (they must trust you and act NOW!!), then you can exert quite a bit of control over them.

It worked for the Nazis, the KKK, and the Shrub, why not for the evangelicals?

But surely I jest, no one could be so silly as to be drawn into this kind of insanely "protectionist" logic, could they? (City Bible is the largest fundie church in Portland, ~4000 members.)
