Edison quoted that he didn't know if our personalities passed into another existence. He quoted "No one knows" However Edison claimed that it was possible to construct a device, so delicate that if there were personalities who wish to get in touch with us in this existence, it would give them a better opportunity to express themselves. I believe Edison's claim was true. The spirits that have broken through to me (with equipment in it's infant-stage) are requesting such a device be made. I am currently filling up a web page full of evidence, and searching for people who are not afraid to give a more "hands on" approach, to get the ball rolling, and get the truth out there.

Good luck with that. My aura senses some fun encounters in your near future.:):)

Thanks, I think the worse is over, just looking for brave folk for "hands on" The spirits are talking like us, so are not too difficult to understand. But they speak in unison, so its difficult to untangle a lot of it, but their info is incredible :jaw-dropp

Some have also claimed to have had conversations with Edison about this very topic over such a device:

Many people including the creator of the Frank’s Box (Frank Sumption) and Christopher Moon (The proponent of the Telephone to the Dead) both claim to have had conversations with Mr. Edison about the design and even upgrades to the devices that they use.

Neither of them have won the million dollar challenge, btw.

I don't know if you are correctly summarising Edison or not but the claim made above is logically contradictory.

The actual quote is given in the skeptic's dictionary entry on EVP:

http://www.skepdic.com/evp.html

An interviewer from Scientific American asked Thomas Edison about the possibility of contacting the dead. Edison, a man of no strong religious views, said that nobody knows whether “our personalities pass on to another existence or sphere” but

it is possible to construct an apparatus which will be so delicate that if there are personalities in another existence or sphere who wish to get in touch with us in this existence or sphere, this apparatus will at least give them a better opportunity to express themselves than the tilting tables and raps and ouija boards and mediums and the other crude methods now purported to be the only means of communication. (Clark 1997: 235)

There is no evidence, however, that Edison ever designed or tried to construct such a device. And he probably did not foresee spirits communicating with our tape recorders and television sets.

As successful an inventor and exploiter of ideas as Thomas Edison was, why should I care about his musings on the paranormal? And while we are at it, could you provide references for Edison's quotes on this?

Stick an Oxygen atom on the end of a needle and bounce it off the raw fields of nature. Read the vibrations by reflected light.

If your spooks can't come through via that device, then ... So far all we've detected are chemical bonds and atomic structures and such. Pedestrian really.
I think it's "sensitive" as in just at the border of what you can pick out of a whole bunch of noise if you look at it just right, rather than necessarily detecting something very small. The spirits like noisy channels.

For the sake of conversation, let's say that you build some kind of device, and you get measurements of a sort that you can completely rule out mundane causes. How do you get from there to ghost? The way I see it, at best, all you can say is, "I have readings I cannot explain."

Only thing you can say for sure is that if Edison built such a device he probably stole the idea from someone else...

Is it?

Claim 1: No one knows if ghosts exist.
Claim 2: But IF they do, we can build a machine that will give them a better opportunity to express themselves than current methods.

Where's the contradiction?
