UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - The United States has launched a worldwide diplomatic drive to head off the calling of an emergency session of the U.N. General Assembly to condemn the U.S.-led war on Iraq, diplomats said on Friday.

I thought the current U.S. governments position on the U.N. was that it is irrelevant, if that's the case, why bother with this diplomatic stuff?

edited to add the word 'government'

Passing such a resolution is not such a big deal even if it does happen.

The article itself says as much:

Unlike the Security Council, whose resolutions can be binding under international law, the General Assembly can make only political statements expressing the sense of the international community.

This will begin to concern me right about the time they get to their 18th resolution.

:D :D The 18th resolution will be authored by France and threatens thatthe security council will "stamp our feet very hard, and hold our breath" until the US listens!! :D

scary huh?

I dunno. More and more, it seems like the words "United Nations" are nothing more than an oxymoron....

I would be cramping my pants at the thought of a coalition of the less-than-willing made up of Cameroon, Angola,Chile,Guinea and mexico, threatening serious consequences.

Amongst their weapons are such diverse elements as corruption, human rights abuses........etc etc

Malaysia is spearheading the motion.

from http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/muslims/portraits/malaysia.html

"Since it attained independence from Britain in 1957, Malaysia has been run by a coalition government dominated by the United Malays National Organization (UNMO), a secular party. However, the 1990s saw growing support for the chief opposition party, the conservative Parti Islam SeMalaysia (PAS), or Islamic Party. The Islamic Party currently controls 15 percent of the national vote, and is calling for implementation of full Sharia law in the country, which would amount to Malaysia becoming a full Islamic state.

"The sitting UNMO government has responded to the popularity of the conservative Islamic Party by becoming more Islamic themselves. They have introduced interest-free Islamic banking, created a new Islamic university, and given Sharia courts greater autonomy. While criminal cases are tried in secular courts, family law is administered by Islamic judges."

It must be fear that causes moderate, rational people, to court favor with the Islamic world. Otherwise, I would imagine any ideology that explicitly oppresses women and that imposes the death penalty for apostasy, would be a hated thing among secular humanists.

They'll do it. Shrub will evict the UN from the USA and drop out.

Was there ever any doubt?

Why is everyone so surprised?

I didn't say happy, note.

That's nothing. There is a UN resolution in the works, proposed by Libya (the current head of the UN's human rights committee--which gives you an idea how effective the whole thing is) that the US must evacuate its colonialist occupation of North America.
