Almost universally despised, as far as I can tell.

I kind of like it. "Citadel", "2000 Man", "Gomper", all good tunes.

The original cover was pretty cool, with the hidden Beatles faces, the middle finger button, the goofy psychedelia.

Does it suck?

With the exception of "Exile on Main Street" it is my favorite Stones' record. I never understood why they let "Citadel" fall out of their repetoire.

But it is what it is; I can understand why some Stones fans hate it...they deviated from their formula.

I'm partial to 12x5 and Aftermath - after Brian died I think they lost a lot of their edge. There aren't that many bands I wish I could bend the rules of temporality to see, but the Stones with a reasonably vertical Brian is right at the top of the list.

The definitely lost their more unique element (when he could stand up) when Brian left/died. I still think they peaked with "Exile" though.

I lost interest in the Stones with "Goat's Head Soup." What an awful record. Since that one, they just have seemd to me to be mostly living up to a publicity image and trading off their name. The odd song that shines, but mostly crap.

Btw, there was a rumor all those years ago that Brian left the Stones to join...the Beatles. I remember an interview with John Lennon where he claimed it was true.

Brian left in 1969, the same year Abbey Road came out. It doesn't seem like there'd be much left of the Beatles for Brian to contribute to, even if he'd been able to get it together to play anything at that point.

The idea that Brian might contribute some cohesion or stability seems a bit of a stretch. John and Brian would have produced an interesting, uh, chemistry between them I reckon.

I don't know. I believe he did play sax on "You Know My Name, Look Up the Number."

Keeping in mind, I am remembering an interview from 30 years ago, I recall Lennon claiming the (brief) idea was the Beatles would go on without Paul. Was he serious? I have no idea. Could have just been Lennon goofing on the press.

Wow, this really takes me back... This was the very first album I ever bought as a kid. My Grandfather gave me the money to buy it and my main motivation was
1: the cool 3D cover
2: the track "she's a rainbow" (note: I was like 12 years old)

I played it on this old mono record player and it sounded like crap which also scratched the heck out of it. The cover is still cool and I still have it stashed away someplace.
