The mystery about how Bradley Manning, a new recruit without any noticeable skills or education was able to obtain data dumps of the Iraq War Diary, the Afghan War Diary, the State Department cables, large numbers of Gitmo case histories and various videos from the directories of JAG officers, has never been adequately explained.

I wondered if a recent profile of Bradley Manning might reveal some clues of who might have been pulling the strings to create the impression of a simply unbelievably feeble information security.

Not that Manning’s conception of patriotic duty would have met with the approval of his superiors. His methods were hardly standard operating procedure. “In public eye, US intel services are mysterious; in the real world, intelligence is a goofy, clunky, and annoying process,” he wrote to ZJ. “drives me NUTS … luckily i use my DC contacts from Starbucks and get the word out to those higher up in the chain.”

ZJ played along with Manning’s espionage narrative. “I can imagine two guys in sunglasses meeting at a starbucks to quickly hand over an envelope … just to get some minor bug repaired,” she wrote, according to logs provided to New York Magazine.

Manning, though, had followed a different script. “Lol ... glamorous, but no … it’s more like i knew this lt colonel from the DIA”—Defense Intelligence Agency—“at starbucks before i was in the military … slept with him once or twice, then i get in the military, i notice the problems, call him and say, hey, find someone who can fix this.”

Would it be possible that Bradley Manning was first groomed by these DC intelligence types, provided with an extreme and all encompassing security clearance that clearly neither his rank, his background or his job description required, and manipulated (but always with plausible deniability) into leaking?

Frankly nothing that was released was particularly incriminating -eg. most of the State Department cables were only embargoed until 2015 or so.

Of course, and that would be very practical because it could then justify going after wikileaks and sites of that nature.

The man had a SECRET security clearance. I've got at least two levels on him. All-encompassing does not describe a security clearance of that level in the least.

His job description required him to have a SECRET security clearance, and that's what he had. His MOS required that clearance as well; and that's what he had. His rank had nothing to do with getting the clearance he had; there are people with less rank than him that had/have equivalent or higher security clearances. It's not that unusual, trust me.
