UNRWA Gaza head says group employs Hamas members - Oct. 4, 2004 13:14
The head of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) confirmed in a television interview that his group employs Hamas members in Gaza.

"I am sure that there are Hamas members on the UNRWA payroll and I don't see that as a crime," UNRWA head Peter Hansen told Canada's CBC television Sunday.

Hamas has been declared a terror organization by the US and Canada, as well as the European Union.

Canada looking at UN agency over Palestinian connection - Sun, 03 Oct 2004 22:03:01 EDT
The federal government is promising to look into the possibility that a United Nations agency Canada backs is employing members of Hamas, a Palestinian group Canada has defined as terrorists.
I move for the Red Cross to employ Al Queda members in order to remain "neutral"....

Yet another reason to demolish the UN building.

There was also recent video of UN vehicles being used to transport kassam rockets. One would think the UN would bend over backwards to make sure their equipment is not misused this way.

Israel Official Seeks U.N. Official Probe - Sun Oct 3, 3:05 PM ET
By PETER ENAV, Associated Press Writer

Israel's U.N. ambassador demanded Sunday that the world body investigate the actions of its top official in Gaza after Israeli accusations that Gaza militants used a U.N. vehicle to transport a homemade rocket.

Ambassador Dan Gillerman said he was asking U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan to investigate Peter Hansen, head of the U.N. Relief and Works Agency, after the Israeli army released a video taken by an unmanned aircraft flying over the Jebaliya refugee camp. UNRWA assists Palestinian refugees in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Israel, which has long accused UNRWA of bias, said the footage showed militants loading a rocket into a U.N. vehicle. The United Nations denied the accusation and said Sunday the footage showed a worker loading a stretcher into an ambulance.
Of course they deny the accusation, but ironically don't have a problem admitting to employing Hamas members...

Correction - there was an allegation by an Israeli source.

There is a difference between what certain Israeli sources say and the truth in the same way there is a difference between what Dubbya claims and the truth, or what Tony Bliar says and the truth etc.

What's the problem? Hamas is a group of freedom fighters. Of course, the UN should support freedom.

Fighting for the "freedom" of slavery is not fighting for freedom.

So then these people died for "freedom"?
I know their are apologists for terrorists hanging around but I thought my comment was clearly dripping with sarcasm.

Bluntly the UN shouldn't be there. There isn't any peace to keep and they don't have the militry abiltiy to impose it.

I didn't catch the sarcasm... :)

But seriously doesn't anyone think that the U.N. should be at least a bit embarassed that they employ people who are members of a group who bomb universities and kill students? I am eager to hear how the U.N. will justify such an admission that they employ such people. Frankly this admission by the UNRWA head Peter Hansen has destroyed any moral high ground the U.N. ever had in regards to the conflict in the Middle East.

If you become as familiar with the handles of those that mostly agree with you as you are with the ones that don't it will help with that sarcasm recognition impairment of yours. :)

I think the UN likes to maintain this polite fiction that Hamas is a political organization and not a terrorist organization. I seem to recall a while back reading that Hamas was voted to represent the teachers union in UNRWA schools. The UN doesn’t seem to see a problem with that either.

Kinda puts all those anti-Israel U.N. resolutions into context now.

I suppose Hamas members are allowed to do another things on their days off. Hansen doesn't seem to suggest that they are hired because they are Hamas members.

And it all depends on what these Hamas members aredoing in the UNRWA. Even though Hamas is a quite unsavory organization, I don't think anyone should care if there are Hamas members cleaning the toliets in the UNRWA.

If I were visiting an UNRWA building and the toilets were cleaned by a Hamas member, I think I would hold it until I got home.

Soooooo then I guess you don't mind that there are thousands of other Palestinians to employ in the West Bank and Gaza who are not members of a group regarded by the E.U. and U.S. as a terrorist organization.

Ever read the THE CHARTER OF THE HAMAS: UserGoogol? Here are some choice sentences;

Hamas is one of the links in the Chain of Jihad in the confrontation with the Zionist invasion.

The time will not come until Muslims will fight the Jews (and kill them); until the Jews hide behind rocks and trees, which will cry: 0 Muslim! there is a Jew hiding behind me, come on and kill him!

Allah is its goal, the Prophet its model, the Quran its Constitution, Jihad its path and death for the sake of Allah is the loftiest of its wishes.

[Peace] initiatives, the so-called peaceful solutions, and the international conferences to resolve the Palestinian problem, are all contrary to the beliefs of the Islamic Resistance Movement.
Hamas makes Al Queda's rhetoric seem almost normal by comparison.

As far as Israel is concerned, the UN are useful idiots. It served it's purpose, now it can be done with.

They feel the same way about Hamas.
