• Quick note - the problem with Youtube videos not embedding on the forum appears to have been fixed, thanks to ZiprHead. If you do still see problems let me know.

The Truth about Facebook!

ah thanks for reminding me of facebook. got to cancel my account, they are selling data.

Never put on facebook or the web anything that should not be public knowledge. Ditto for JREF forum.

Edit. This video is 23 months old.

Anyone wanna summarise it? I can't be bothered to watch five minutes of crap, especially as I'd have to stop watching Spoony's playthrough of Phantasmagoria: A Puzzle of the Flesh.

"also collects information about you from other sources such as newspapers and IM services. This information is gathered regardless of your use of the web site"

I'd like to know how they do that, especially technically. So facebook "knows" who I IM on AOL/MSN/etc or what sites I go to from google reader even though the two are compeltely seperate? That's pretty amazing!

E: Oh hey DARPA and illuminati. BINGO!

That's a great playthrough :)

As far as Facebook knows, I'm 107 years old, as I gave them a birth year of 1903 for my profile, in the hopes that it makes any data they gather on me pretty much worthless.

If you are that old, then you must be playing that farm game.

Simply the fact Ashton Kutcher helped popularize it makes Twitter far more evil than Facebook.

Basically Facebook keeps information, was founded by A who worked with B, which is an associated group to C which is secretly a front group to the CIA, which is in contact with D, who employed E who worked as a researcher for the Department of Defense. E then left to go work for DARPA which is a front organization for the Office of Information Awareness...we are all going to die! Not much more than that really.

My horror story with facebook is the fact that I spent a year and a half fighting with linkedin to remove a profile by someone pretending to be me using information from facebook.

Really? I'm still working on beating Harvester.

Sites like this take advantage of cookies and java script to action this. You used facebook, it has a cookie on your machine that keeps a token of who you are for the next time you go back, Now you got to Kongreate (sp) and flash gaming site for example. within the page of Kongreate, Facebook has a small amount of Javascript that runs. It then sees your cookie, sees what site you are at, and knows who what where and when.

A fun way to see what sites are doing what in Firefox is to install noscript, and then check what scripts are running on a page.

For example for randi.org, the following sites are running scripts
randi.org (the forum itself)
Google-analytics.com (Track trends/referers etc , quite common)
youtube.com (Randi.org allows embeded youtube, these script allow it)
yahooapis.com (similar to googleapis, allows extra functionality)

If Randi.org was to allow Facebook, then the guys at facebook would know what you do here. same with Double click etc, Thankfully randi.org is ethical, and is only allowing certain scripts.

How to prevent this you may ask, I turn off all scripts via noscript, then only allow the ones i trust, but that does hampper browsing. Other ways of tracking include tracking images etc. but thats for another post

Wow interesting, thanks for the insight!

I haven't bothered to look into it more, but i found it interesting that facebook takes the time on your PC, instead of asking you to select your timezone.

I never bothered to even look this up, till one day my facebook page times were wrong and you cant change it, only way to change it is via your PC clock. I still haven't got a email back on fixing this problem(formatted so many times since and still no change), but wouldn't this be a way of accessing your PC? without you agreeing to? unless its in the fine print.

Are you saying you formatted your hard drive to fix a PC clock problem?

I started to play that farm game with my brothers. After a month we came to the conclusion that the person with the least time invested was the winner. My older brother had 12 dead crops so he won. Unfortunately, I was the loser.
