A big heads up to JREF members (and lurkers)
This small venue skeptical event is often overlooked in the shadow of the great TAM events. I want to encourage everyone to consider the Skeptic Toolbox as another option to fulfill your social and educational needs.
I personally have been to 3 or 4 Toolboxes and loved every one. They aren't the big Las Vegas showy events the TAM's are. They are quieter and much more intimate. The faculty are fixed with rotating topics each year. It is rare more than 100 people attend, yet for the most part the same people attend every year.
The lectures are excellent, the faculty is brilliant.
Generally most people stay on the University of Eugene's campus. Weather is hot (bring a fan for your room) and we sleep dorm like, with shared bathrooms. If this isn't your style, hotels are within walking distance of the university. We eat at the college cafeteria with long breaks to socialize and munch.
The best part of the toolbox are the meet-ups, everyone sits together for meals, the conversations are one-on-one or the most small groups. The amazing people you interact with and the calmer setting make for a great vacation for reflection at the end of the summer.
The topic this year is "your wonderful brain" and I will quote the site, "...perhaps the most fundamental illusion is that of free-will. Our workshop will try to make sense of this very puzzling issue."
I don't want to discourage anyone away from TAM (I will be there), but want to suggest that both are great options for different reasons.
Here is the website for anyone interested. http://www.skepticstoolbox.org/
I will be here also, and welcome any questions. BTW I am not affiliated with the Toolbox or the faculty. Just an advocate for more interaction and socialization amongst us. There is more than enough room for other skeptic groups.
