Hey there

I would love to see an episode on the ever so popular "Law of Attraction" / "The Secret".

Of all the great pseudo-scientific funnies out there, this one seems to be the most hip. I think its rather clear that setting your mind to a goal can increase the chances that it comes about (perhaps greatly increase), and anyone who would argue otherwise has a few screws lose. However, the belief that your thoughts somehow metaphysically reach out and affect changes in the universe to bring about what you're thinking of is so ridiculous as to be insulting to one's intelligence (and thats an understatement).

Any thoughts on getting an episode about this?

Thank you, Lisa Simpson, for that remarkably hilarious video.

I haven't read nor seen "The Secret". I only took a sneak peek at the book at the Amazon website. My first impression was that it was a bunch of baloney. A series of cliche copy-paste philosophies, processed and sold as a Secret.

My dad, a guy who I have a lot of respect for, saw the DVD. I was expecting him to call me the next day telling me what a silly documentary he had seen. Instead, he told me that this movie reafirmed everything he has always standed for. Now, just to make things clear: The "things he has always standed for" are basically how the human mind can be the final outcome of reality. In other words: he who is convinced that his life is Hell, already lives in Hell. He who has already assumed a destructive attitude about life, cannot overcome any obstacles. I believe that to be true. I'm just not sure if this is the final claim of "The Secret" or if, on the other hand, he just saw his thought reflected on it, because it suited its philosophy.

I certainly don't believe in that whole "all you gotta do is wish something really strong so you can have it" crap. Wishing is only a part of it. You have to fight for what you want. Wishing for it certainly is only part of it, and believeing that wishing is all it takes sounds to me like silly woo. I also thing that sending that message to society is only reinforcing our nature for consumism and for wanting to have things, as well as our eternal tendency to desire which can in excess become quite addictive and corruptive, in my opinion.

i just watched the secret. Theres a lot of truth there, the only problem is, they avoid mentioning we need the hard work as well
ive seen it over and over again that when we complain about events they keep coming back. The trick is to focus on what you want and avoid thinking or complaining about what you dont want. Not easy.
The difference from other self help books is that it doesnt tell you to think positive and abvoid negative thinking, which is hard and would drive you mad. Instead you focus on feeling good. When you feel good you have positive thoughts and vice versa. Their site answer some critics

"The Secret" is just the same old "Visualization" crap slightly warmed over.
It's totally worthless.

How strange. Tonight I received a DVD of the Secret to copy for friends. They told me what it was about and I rolled my eyes in disbelief. I asked them if this was some Oprah pop culture nonsense. And of course they confirmed that it was. All of the weak anecdotal evidence came out "A friend of mine read the book and now they are......I watched the DVD and so did three friends and now they are happier, wealthier........" Why do weak minded people fall into this trap? These are the same people that tell me about their lucky lottery numbers. Then they told me about what they like to do on vacation. They can't relate to me, because I hate vacations. I really love the work that I do and if I am away from it for very long I get terribly bored. A vacation for me is time away from one paid job to do much of the same type of work for myself or someone else. I picked something that I love and work very hard. It doesn't seem like work. But my friends will read and watch crap while they hope through magic that it will give them a job that they really like. The solution is to not watch a DVD or read a book about setting goals, but to actually set goals, determine what it will take to achieve them, find people who will assist you in reaching the goals then go and do the work. It's the work part that people don't like. Instead they wait for the lottery draw. It drives me mad! The funny thing is that most people in my company would really like to have my job. They see it as the dream job. But they could have done all of the work that I have done to gain my qualifications and applied like anyone else.

What is scary to me is when the authors imply that "The Secret" can be used to cure diseases. That is not only stupid,it is downright dangerous.

My father used to relate how the local Christian Science clergyman, when he got appendicitis, went to a surgeon. Faith is one thing, but when it intersects with reality, it has to give way, or one gets the Darwin award.

I saw the DVD in the library and after reading the blurb on the back decided to take it out for laughs. I was certainly not disappointed -- there are parts that are so hookey that I almost fell out of my chair laughing. What surprised me was that among all the garbage about getting all the material stuff that you desire there were some sections that I strongly agreed with, especially the one about the importance of gratitude. I find that I am much happier if I am grateful for whatever is happening rather than complaining about it. The DVD is well worth watching if you can borrow a copy but don't waste any money on it.

I've had a lot of requests for this, so it's on my list -- but it's just SO damn stupid and SO damn tired that I'm finding it hard to get motivated. :-)

Give me some more Raelians, they were a lot more fun to talk about.
