It seems since the US version of the movie Ring came out, there has been a forum for fans of it. Most of them seem to be fairly young (teens, maybe?). And Ring forum is fine and well; lots of stuff to chat over. And then you get stuff like this: http://pub70.ezboard.com/ftheringforumfrm1.showMessage?topicID=1556.topic

This is really odd, and I can swear by my life that this is 100% true.
(snipped background info) I had a bad night the last night, and when I have had a bad day I tend to get supernatural stuff drawn to me. In any case, I thought about what had been going on, and it got me so sad I almost began to cry. So I looked out the window to try to distract me, and decided to look at the TV. I looked at it for a few seconds, and started to breath heavier, without forcing myself to do it. It was natural. All of a sudden, the TV started to flicker. JUST that one. It flickered on and off, and I could SWEAR I could catch it trying to settle into a picture at one flicker. And after about a minute of doing that with me just oddly staring at it, the bus made a quick stop and I caught my breath and looked around, I was startled, and it didn't happen again.

Now hows THAT for creepy?
and this reply:
The human mind, or possibly this case body are capable of some interesting, if not possibly incredible feats. All living beings generate a certain amount of energy and that energy can often times do things such as temporarily blow out street lights (as in my case) or effect certain electronic equipment. I just heard a guest on Coast To Coast AM talking about this a few weeks ago. Did anyone else on the bus notice, btw?

Both dated Dec. 13, 2003.

Such a strong belief....!

It's very difficult to not sign up an ezboard account and rip into that.

Yeah, yeah... I should have known better. A movie like Ring would attract some really kooky people, right?

ANY crappy "scary" movie out lately would inspire the same behaviour out of young people. Just go look at Randi's article featuring "Gothika".

Who are you to scoff?
Maybe they are just Wizards

(please tell me someone else here has read the Harry Dresden series)
:D

This quackery is a threat to science and rational thinking! It must be stopped! Skeptics prepare for war with the kooks!

I use the name "Yahweh of Nod" on EzBoard...

I'll be over there shortly...

:D

Hey, I like that movie!

Movies don't kill brain cells, people kill brain cells.

Hey Yahweh, I think you did pretty good over there on that other board.

When that one guy at the end of that thread started talking about "Eastern Science" , and how "Western Science" was flawed I just about lost it.

I've had fights with people on user groups over The Matrix.
Some of them think we're actually living inside the matrix because thier "skin doesn't feel like its touching air" or thier "breathing is different."
When youre faced with teenagers wanting to be noticed as deep thinkers because they understood the plot of an action movie, its hard to talk some sense into them.
Especially when thier only argument is "You can't prove that we're NOT in The Matrix."
Sigh.

Kick them in the nuts and say "that felt pretty real didn't it sunshine!"

(please note this is not a serious suggestion - Hannibal in no way endorses violence or Police brutality unless it is absolutley necessary or you really feel like it)

(Please note again teh above suggestion is a joke too and...oh bollocks you know the rest!)

Bahala Na!

I had no idea that the laws of physics, chemistry, and biology changed dependent on what hemisphere one is in. Western science, then, is flawed, yet self correcting. So Eastern is inherently correct, even though it's also composed of human ideas and hypothesis? Lack of study and all that.... lack of self correction seems to be a difference between the rationalists on Ring and JREF. East and West. :D

Ah, but that Ring forum existed long before the American version came out. That makes it okay.

Read all 5(think that's all of them). :D
When I'm in the right mood, I devour brain candy like that.

Speaking of the other board, I think I'll go take a look as well.

Just finished the fith one, yesterday (borrowed all 5 off my brother about a month ago) excellent series.
Might be happy to know they are being optioned for a weekly TV series.

Thank you Archangel and Ossai.

I think I just found that elusive X-Mas gift for my nephews.

Edited to add: Wow! Those look really cool. Kind of a cross between Spenser and Harry Potter.

Its an interesting board, real nice folk, pretty intelligent people.

Its not a big board filled with believers.

I would have considered posting more often there... I'm just not that into "The Ring" (it was a good movie, by the way).

I also made a few posts in the thread What Religion are you? (I made the last post on page 3, a few more on page 4). The forum administrator, inteferon (a nice character by the way) and I had an interesting exchange after I said atheism was not a religion (of course, when detailing why atheism is not a religion - special thanks to Stimpson J. Cat for helpful information - I missed the part where that there is no dogma in atheism that stems from the life or teachings of a spiritual figure... oops, my bad).

Let's not oversimplify things here by attempting to judge them according to the Scientific Method. I'm a scientist myself, and firmly believe in the Method, but it is wholly inadequate to prove/disprove matters at this higher meta level. Only philosophical analysis can do that.

Lifegazer would like that. And a few others.
