I know this is old, but ...

Did you know that terrorists can alter global climate and cause earthquakes and tidal waves by using fantastic machines that generate electromagnetic waves?

Apparently some government officials at least used to think so and made public statements to that effect! And a former Secretary of Defense, no less!

Where's James Bond 007 when we need him most?

Wonder if Mr. Cohen still believes the following, in regard to terrorists:

...

Others [terrorists] are engaging even in an eco-type of terrorism whereby they can alter the climate, set off earthquakes, volcanoes remotely through the use of electromagnetic waves.

So there are plenty of ingenious minds out there that are at work finding ways in which they can wreak terror upon other nations. It's real, and that's the reason why we have to intensify our efforts, and that's why this is so important.

NOW YOU KNOW THE TRUTH BEHIND GLOBAL WARMING!
THOSE BLASTED TERRORISTS ARE RESPONSIBLE!

They are slowly terraforming the entire world into one giant Arabian desert! We are doomed (God willing)!

Now, years later, in the 21st century, they must be much more advanced.

To heck with James Bond, this is a job for Superman!

LOL

Oh, yes, this is all absolutely true and valid. The terrorists have developed a whole variety of WMDs*, including WMEs**, WMPs*** and WMSS50PCTs****. These evildoers must be stopped so we can continue to drive our SUVs*****!

KEY:
-------------------------------------------------
* - Weapons of Meteorological Destruction
** - Weapons of Mass Evaporation

Don't forget the other WMD

Weapons of Mass Deception!

:D

Great stuff, Jay. You got a good belly laugh from me for that one. You just can't make this stuff up.

Truth Is Peculiarer Than Fiction

Great stuff, Jay. You got a good belly laugh from me for that one. You just can't make this stuff up.

It's spooky.

I can't help but wonder what percentage of the people who heard or read that news release actually believed what he said.

And who are the "scientists" advising the Department of Defense?

The Three Stooges?

We are doomed!

Either the terrorists will kill us or we'll all die laughing at the government.

LOL

So we should burn more fossil fuels, because otherwise the terrorists win?

I guess the "terrorists'" apparent fixation on trying to attack with homemade explosives is just to distract from their more sophisticated, large-scale goals.

I wonder why nobody attacked us with an EMP-Weapon yet that would destroy nearly every micro-electronic device. And I've read that such a device costs only 400$ to produce. Now that would be scary.

I wouldn't think the economy version has the range to really decimate much of anything...

I think Sec Def Cohen read Ken Follet's Hammer of Eden and thought it was non fiction.

Going from Dr Perry to that maroon was like going from day into night.

I don't know which sources you've read, but if detonated at the most effective height, it could paralyze a whole city, state or even coast. Well, it would also paralyze any micro-electronic/communication used by the military in Iraq, for example.

I'm lost.

Could you please explain about the link?

What's wrong with it ?

Nothing wrong with the link, but the link documents that someone (from the DoD presumably) made that nonsense up. Unless it's true of cause, but that's a possibility I feel fairly comfortable disregarding.

This sounded strange, so I actually looked up the link. And it isn't clear that what he actually said, in context, is really remarkable. Here's a more full quote:

Q: Let me ask you specifically about last week's scare here in Washington, and what we might have learned from how prepared we are to deal with that (inaudible), at B'nai Brith.

A: Well, it points out the nature of the threat. It turned out to be a false threat under the circumstances. But as we've learned in the intelligence community, we had something called -- and we have James Woolsey here to perhaps even address this question about phantom moles. The mere fear that there is a mole within an agency can set off a chain reaction and a hunt for that particular mole which can paralyze the agency for weeks and months and years even, in a search. The same thing is true about just the false scare of a threat of using some kind of a chemical weapon or a biological one. There are some reports, for example, that some countries have been trying to construct something like an Ebola Virus, and that would be a very dangerous phenomenon, to say the least. Alvin Toeffler has written about this in terms of some scientists in their laboratories trying to devise certain types of pathogens that would be ethnic specific so that they could just eliminate certain ethnic groups and races; and others are designing some sort of engineering, some sort of insects that can destroy specific crops. Others are engaging even in an eco- type of terrorism whereby they can alter the climate, set off earthquakes, volcanoes remotely through the use of electromagnetic waves.

So there are plenty of ingenious minds out there that are at work finding ways in which they can wreak terror upon other nations. It's real, and that's the reason why we have to intensify our efforts, and that's why this is so important.

Now I can't tell exactly what Cohen is trying to say, and he seems to be doing a poor job at saying it, but it's not clear from the full quote that he thinks any of that is actually going on right now.

The Aliens are doing it....

The Arrival

BY ROGER EBERT / May 31, 1996

Cast & Credits
Zane Zaminski: Charlie Sheen
Gordian: Ron Silver
Ilana Green: Lindsay Crouse

The planet, we are informed, is warming. The ice caps are melting.

Climates are changing. Scientists blame factory smokestacks, car exhausts andthe destruction of the rain forests.
``The Arrival'' has a more terrifyinghypothesis to explain the phenomenon. In the great paranoid tradition of science fiction, the discovery ofthis possibility is made by one man who cannot get anyone to listen to him andwho grows desperate as the establishment slams its doors. The man is ZaneZaminski (Charlie Sheen), a radio astronomer who listens for signs ofintelligence from outer space. Unlike his colleagues, he's looking in the noisyFM band: ``It's like searching for a needle,'' his partner tells him, ``in ahaystack of needles.'' When he picks up an unmistakable signal, Zane takes itgleefully to his boss (Ron Silver), only to be told that the government's entireintergalactic eavesdropping operation is being scaled down because of budgetcutbacks. Zane's frustration is the engine for a science-fiction film ofunusual intelligence that keeps on thinking all the way to the end, springingsurprises and ideas.

Just Because I'm Paranoid Doesn't Mean They're NOT Out To Get Me

Understood.

I didn't take it entirely seriously myself.

But immediately following that statement he said

So there are plenty of ingenious minds out there that are at work finding ways in which they can wreak terror upon other nations. It's real, and that's the reason why we have to intensify our efforts, and that's why this is so important.

Saying that it is "real" in proximity to the previous statements, can be easily taken to support the notion that the government is giving some credence to the idea that terrorists have access to extraordinary technology of science fiction proportions, actually developing and on the brink of applying the technologies stated.

I was primarily interested in that it was rather humorous to see such statements in a public press release from the DoD, considering the way a significant proportion of the public could likely interpret it.

Potential conspiracy theory fodder!

I got quite a chuckle out of it on first encounter.

And you think you could buy a 20 megaton nuclear weapon for $400?

I've read that all of our technology was reverse-engineered from the Roswell UFO crash.

This begs the question: if terrorists causing natural disasters... shouldn't SUV-drivers and other energy-wasters, too? Should we throw everyone who take long showers and drive their car to the mailbox be thrown in Gitmo? Should a Katrina Commission have been created after Hurricane Katrina with the intent of throwing every large-scale carbon emitter in the US in jail?

Sure it may be alarming to read that 'omg, the terrorists are going to alter the climate!', but the reason I thought this was satire at first is that, eh, who doesn't? I think the combined effort of all climate deniers and coach potatoes not doing anything about their emissions does more damage with their WMDs than the terrorists ever could:D.
