That sounds like a terrible idea installing devices in people's heads unless they absolutely need it!

Short for "proletarian".

Oh, and a light bulb in the brain isn't enough to wake you up. You'd need to genetically engineer the person's brain cells to become photosensitive too (they aren't by default, for rather obvious reasons).
 
The really interesting part isn't the research itself, it's the technique used. This will most likely let us tease apart details of how brains work that were previously inaccessible.

Worth noting that because the cells that respond to the light are genetically altered, human testing is impossible under current ethics.

Iknow of a few people who "absolutely need" something installed in their heads. Some elected to high office.:)
 
Unless you mean a device that would give them a conscience... I don't agree
