"Everybody is coming after me," Mr. Dietl recalls Mr. Imus telling him in a phone call that day. Mr. Imus and Mr. Dietl discussed the possibility of Mr. Imus appearing on Mr. Sharpton's radio show on Monday. Mr. Dietl says he advised against it, saying Mr. Sharpton would use Mr. Imus only to advance his own agenda. But Mr. Imus told his friend he wanted to use the show to apologize again.

The WSJ has made a great piece about how this railroading began, who the players are, and in general how we "Manufactured Dissent".

I said in another thread, the real story was who generated this mountain out of molehill and not what Imus actually said.

So this is where we lineup to cry for some millionaire who got railroaded*?

*Would have been fired from just about any other job

Thats a very perceptive and insightful comment. You win the thread! Grats.

Yeah that was quick. No seriously, how many jobs can you think of where you can say that comment and not get fired if the wrong party overhears you? I do think the fact that this is some sort of national controversy is pretty ridiculous, but he by no means got railroaded. Try repeating what he said at your job around various people, then tell me how long before you get fired.

So would about a thousand other prominent comedians. Real dumb argument.

Whoracle's right. If I made such remarks, I'd be on the unemployment line within minutes. There would never have been a mountain made by Sharpton if Imus' bosses had done the right thing and canned him immediately. But of course, money talks and bull***t walks. They kept him around until the costs outweighed the benefits, and only then dumped him. Like all businesses, CBS and MSNBC only care about the bottom line.

Well if they are prominent, that implies they making the kind of money that they would still be able to provide for their families. Also, Imus will make more money off the backlash to the backlash then he was before, so again I'm having a real hard time finding pity for the guy. Same thing with any other "prominent" comedian. I don't think Michael Richards has been hurting for money since his little incident. I hear Mel Gibson is doing just fine these days.

How many jobs can you say what Sacha Baron Cohen said in Borat and not get fired?

Bottom line, bottom line, bottom line. How many times do I have to say it before everyone gets it?

I'll explain it so even you can understand: Imus didn't get fired for his remarks. He got fired because he became a drain on the bottom line. Period.

If you can pull off being a fake foreigner like he did, you'd be ok. It's not like he was dressed as his normal self and running around calling black people chocolate face. Also, just because one guy got away with it, doesn't mean it's ok for all of us to do it. I mean really is that the best you can do? The Borat defense? "Gee boss, I shouldn't fired because that Borat feller got away with way worse than what I said!"

5 out the current top 7 threads in politics are now about Imus.....

i'm sure that says a lot about something :)

?

What is there not to get? I've said at least 30 times that I understand the financial aspect of this. That's not at all in question. No one is debating this. Whoracle is making a silly and stupid argument that is easily illustrated by his avatar. How he made the argument without looking at that is rather puzzling.

In any event, as I have stated time and again, I don't care that the business decisions were made and I readily concede that Imus said something really stupid it's the visceral reaction and mob mentality and the threat of boycotts in an attempt by a minority to intimidate advertisers to effect change that I'm objecting to.

Your argument is obviously really really stupid. No one is justifying what Imus did based on Borat. Just pointing out how utterly stupid your argument is. Many comedians would be fired for saying what they say in every day life.

Sorry dude, you raised a stinker. Deal with it.

It doesn't matter what other people can and can't get away with in entertainment. Just because other people have gotten away with worse doesn't Imus gets to say whatever he wants.

30 times? Well, I guess I should apologize for not spending my time reading through all the other threads on this subject.

Prominent comedians other than who? How do comedians play into this?
Whoracle says that Imus would have been fired had he said what he did at work. When I go to the Ice House or other Stand Up clubs I often hear a lot of raucnchy comedy that would not be tolerated at most jobs.

Most of the comedy coming from the Friars Club roasts would not be tolerated at most jobs.

Here, try this, go up to one of your female co workers and grab her breasts the way Pam Anderson's were grabbed when she was roasted by at lest one commedian at her roast. Tell some of the jokes that included the word penis and vagina.

Now, guess what will happen?

I get it he works in a different industry than most of us. However, there are still lines you can't cross (especially post Michael Richards). You also just have to be aware that if you are white and in the entertainment industry, your leash on things you can say can get pretty short, pretty fast. Or as Bill Burr put it, living in fear of the podium. And yeah, most comedians get away with worse because they are playing in front of the audience for House of Laffs or whatever, not millions of people all across the country.

Now that I don't have a problem with.
