The Real ID Act...is it for real?

Yes, it's real. What's not real is almost everything you'll hear about it from sources like "Zeitgeist".

the real ID act is real, however i would wager what zeitgeist said about it isnt true

basically its a set of minimum standards for state-issued photo IDs (drivers licenses and such)

its not a national ID card

EDIT: it also doesnt mean ID cards will have RFID chips, and also does not mean they will contain a sample of your DNA

Basically it means you have to show a birth certificate, Social Security Card and proof of address before being issued a state ID. That is it, really.

i believe it also states what information must appear on the ID (name, date of birth, address, etc) and that said information must also be stored in a "common machine-readable format" which many CTers will tell you means an RFID chip, but most states seem to be choosing the cheaper (and more common) magnetic strip or barcode

Yep. I believe I forgot that. A few states are using that to simplify the use of cigarette vending machines, which of course the CT'ists see as a horrible thing. Personally I like the idea, as opposed to having to show ID everytime I want to buy my namesake from a vending machine in a bar. :D

EDIT: Kids, don't smoke; it is bad for you. I only smoke when I drink, and only drink when I smoke. :)

whats wrong with the USA having some set of uniform standards for drivers licenses?

should we go back to the Articles of Confederation?

That's what I've never understood. For years I've read about people in the US having troubling buying things like alcohol with an out-of-state drivers license, because the people in the store didn't know what all the other state's documents were supposed to look like. Why would anyone object to an ID that everyone can actually read, and understand, and know isn't a fake?
