Okay, this is the first thread on the upcoming Canadian election. My evidence that Harper will drop the writ is abundant, but here's an article from today:

Layton predicts election

For our friends in the U.S. and around the rest of the world... Because the party leaders are already chosen, Canada will call and execute its federal election entirely between now and November!

Americans in particular should care, because (according to buyusa.gov):

The relationship between the United States and Canada is the closest and most extensive in the world. It is reflected in the staggering volume of bilateral trade--the equivalent of $1.5 billion a day in goods--as well as in people-to-people contact. About 300,000 people cross the shared border every day.

as well, border states share things like watersheds, and so forth...

So everyone join with the six or so Canadians who post here regularly and comment! :D

Anyway, to begin the fun, I will NOT be voting for the party of Our Good Buddy Steve .

What about people who are snowed in and can't get to the polls? Shaw Cable should set up voting from home, I reckon.

I'm surprised Canada would wait until winter to have elections instead of having them during Winter Is Coming.

Just kidding, really. I know there are parts of Canada where the permafrost actually softens slightly during the first two weeks in August.

I love Canada, if it could be put where Mexico is now think of the huge improvement in the whole continent, plus I could drive there in 2 hours.

I was in Canada 2 weeks after 9/11, and man, the people in that country are so kind and pleasant. I wish Canada had more influence on US politics, I'm sure it would be an improvement.

Even little things like TV news are so much better in Canada, I recall watching a news program that contained only objective reporting of actual facts, and did not even try to make people fearful.

Well, I, for one, plan to don my snow shoes and trudge from my igloo to the joint Canada/U.S.-funded arctic research/polling station to cast my vote, and neither snow nor heavier snow shall stop me! :D

It's a neocon plot to take Canadians' attention from the U.S. election.

Really? Some posters here seem to really hate Canadians expressing their views of U.S. politics... we were even compared to Oliver!! :eye-poppi

Which newscast was that? :boxedin:

...

Seriously,

Wow I didn't know Harper tanked so badly.

What do you mean by Harper tanking? The fact that I don't like him? The short time frame of a minority government?

I gathered that from the article.

"He seems intent on quitting his job. I told him if he's prepared to quit his job he can explain that failure to Canadians," Layton said outside the gates of 24 Sussex Dr. around 1:30 p.m. ET.

Was it just bs or hyperbole?

If I haven't made it clear enough, I cannot support the party of Our Good Buddy Steve . That said, Jack Layton is the leader of one of the opposition parties, so of course he's going to call Harper a failure. Whether he is, or not, will enter into discussion in this (again, remarkably shorter than the U.S.) election cycle...

You won't hear me saying that about our neighbor that was smart enough not to buy the bridge for sale Iraq war con job and the first nation in North America to support gay marriage. Canadians seem to have a mutually shhared commitment to be fair with each other. I wish that was more widespread in the US.

Which newscast was that? :boxedin:

Too long ago to recall now, I was staying at a hotel in Kelowna BC and it was a local newscast. The reporters were calmly talking about a legal issue without seeming to distort or dumb down the topic. I knew immediately it was not a USA broadcast.

I also read CBC online because their reporting seems fairly professional, if a bit conservative.

I'll start posting here when I can figure out what this election is all about -- if anything. :D

I had the pleasure of being called today, on behalf of Stevie Boy, to find out if I'd consider voting for his chosen conservative candidate. Alas, my kids were listening, so I had to keep it to a limited vocabulary of words I'm not reluctant to explain to my kids. But I got my point across without breaking rule 10.

Internet stalkers everywhere can start zeroing in on my position by knowing that I live in the Riding which has Rona Ambrose as our MP .

You know... Rona Ambrose? The fat-face hag who stood up in front of the world and said that not only could we not meet Kyoto (true), but that we weren't even going to try. Moreover, on the international stage, she said it was the previous government's fault, we're not going to try, nuts to the rest of you! She was so reviled across the country that Our Good Buddy Steve  had to sack her from the Environment Minister's position.

She sends me at least two brochures a week...

This election, I'm voting ABC (Anything But Conservative)... :D

And what about the current TV ads with statements from "real people" about how wonderful little Stevie and his gang of know-nothing Neanderthals are doing?

Like, I'm going to change my mind based on what some actor on TV pretends to believe?

:boggled:

Because Our Good Buddy Steve  has a minority government (that is, the party with the most seats in the house forms the government, regardless of whether it actually holds a minority of the total seats in a multi-party parliamentary system), it is less than likely that someone will come on here who actually supports our Good Buddy Steve .

Therefore, this thread my die quickly, perhaps before the writ is even dropped! So, let's change tracks...

Given that I will not vote for the Conservatives, why should I vote for any one of the other parties? ;)

Since my MP is NDP, I get two brochures a week from some random PC MP from out of BC. They figure their seats are safe, so they can use up their legal allowance for campaigning by campaigning for other candidates. Lovely way to show respect for law and order, by skirting campaign funding laws.

wait wait wait... you mean the other parties really are in a legal grey area regarding campaign funding?! I'm shocked... shocked!! :eye-poppi

;)

ETA: As I said - Be it resolved that no poster here is going to vote for Our Good Buddy Steve , Jimbo should vote for X... Go.

ETTA: Oops, misread your post... must be because the PCs don't exist anymore...

When they called me they asked for financial support. She didn't know how to respond when I replied that I wouldn't even consider it until they stopped making people as stupid as Stockwell Day ministers of the crown. I guess Albertans aren't supposed to think like that.
