The Infinitely Prolonged
I happen to belong to a bit of a social skeptical group, in New York City, called The Jolly Thirteen Club. It is based on The Thirteen Club, an anti-superstition social gathering established in the 1880's. We meet on the 13th of every month, usually for dinner in some reasonably priced restaurant. If it falls on a weekend, or on a Friday, we sometimes do other misc. fun things.
Since the Friday, the 13th of July happens to fall during TAM, I figured we could try to have a cross-continent joint activity of some sort!
The basic plan is this: Dinner someplace, with cameras and mics set up to attempt to have a conversation with everyone at the New York end of the club meeting. Or, at the very least we can wave to each other a whole lot.
The connection to NY does not need to last all that long, if it becomes a nuisance.
But, I think we might write up some semblance of an outline of an agenda of sorts, beforehand, maybe. And, we might have some genuinely interesting things to say to each other, over the web.
A future post, in this thread, will specify the exact time and place. But, it will most likely be somewhere between 6 and 8 PM (probably closer to 6), and most likely somewhere in the South Point hotel.
It will probably conflict with the SGU dinner. But, it should be over before Penn's party!
I am coordinating this with the organizers of The Jolly Thirteen in NYC. They usually begin around 8 PM NYC Time, so starting the web operations at 9 PM, NYC Time, (6 PM LV time) should not be too bad.
I will bring a laptop with a web cam and microphone. (The laptop has a built-in camera, but I might bring a better-quality external one with me, anyway.)
And, I should be able to use my SmartPhone (a Droid Razr Maxx) as an additional communications device, if we need one.
No one else needs to bring any equipment. But, if you voluntarily wish to supplement my own communications capabilities with yours, you are welcomed to do so.
The platform might be Skype. But, there are a few other options I will look into, and I will get back to anyone who cares, later.
If anyone has any recommendations, questions, or comments, let me know!
And, all those who would like to try this stunt, should also chime in here, as well!
(I wish I thought of this idea sooner!)
