Penultimate Amazing
I've been listening to quite a bit of Robert's confirmation hearings, mainly since they pre-empted all my usual NPR programming.
If nothing else, the man is well-informed and nimble in his answers. He has been able to remain quite "opaque" about any of his opinions on hot-button issues.
The first day, he clearly staked out the line which he would not cross; he was not going to discuss anything that might be "liable to come before the court".
Given this clear limit, a number of the august senators have simply used their 30 minutes to proselytize about their favorite "cause".
The Senator from Kansas used almost his entire period to go off on abortion, using emotion-provoking language and decrying the tendency of parents to abort fetusus that are found to be suffering from tendencies to autism, retardation, or other birth defects/developmental problems. Abort them rather than allowing them to "bless" us with their presence in the world.....
That sort of thing. Even the NPR legal commentators went off on this tendency.
