Dushanbe, August 04: Tajikistan on Wednesday banned all children and teenagers from worshipping in mosques as the volatile Central Asian republic pressed ahead with its battle against rising Islamic fundamentalism.

President Emomali Rakhmon signed the measure into law after it was unanimously adopted by the upper house of parliament last month, local news reports said.

The law bans those under the age of 18 from praying in churches or mosques and requires them to study in secular schools, Aziya-Plus news agency said.

The authorities said the change would help stem the spread of religious fundamentalism in the overwhelmingly Muslim but secular nation.

This is clearly a insidious plot by the Muslims to give a fake impression that they can be moderate while they are really plotting to take over the whole world.

I'm almost positive that you're being sarcastic.

If I were you, I'd include a winkie, just to keep things clear.

If the SOCIAL EXPERIMENT called USSR was any indicator we should expect this move to backfire on the Tajikistani society.

In the USSR they prevented churches and any religious practices and educated everyone in a secular education system for almost 80 years.....what did that achieve?

I think this move by the Tajikistani government is not a wise one. I think this might actually create more fundamentalism.

But the other social experiment in the USA did not work either. Freedom of religion with secular state education failed too from stemming the spread of fundamentalism.

Somehow I am not sure this is the way to go about fighting crackpot fundamentalism. If anything this is only going to inspire more reactionaries.

Well it managed to create and maintain a secular society, which still exist in pretty much of all the ex-soviet states today, except in some places like Chechnya.

Then again they haven't banned people from worshiping in Mosques completely, but only if they are under 18. I don't think the situation is comparable.

Most people in Central Asia are secular and while the influence of Islamism is definitively growing most people don't really care that much about religion. A guy from Kyrgyzstan even said the police sometimes arrested people if they were wearing a niqab and similar clothing, although i might be mistaking it for Uzbekistan.

If they are going to worry about someone they are going to have to worry about the middle classes being pissed off at the way they are running the country.

Can you imagine what would happen in the U.S. if congress passed a law banning children from Christian churches?

It'd last as long as it took for a lawyer to get in front of the SCotUS and point out that it's a violation if the 1st Ammendment.

I guess that's the same thing that will happen in Tajikistan ...
