The flood stories and other stuff.

Ok I have a two part post here. If it belongs in the religion and philosophy forum, meh.

1. In highschool I remember the similarities when reading the story of the flood in Gilgamesh(sp?) and the flood in Genesis. Is there some connection or should we expect similarities in diffrent relgious stories?

2. Are there are skeptical sites that take a critical look at the supposed historical evidence that proves some supernatural aspect of the bible?

Most of the Bible's stories have their roots in Mesopotamian mythological tales. From the creation to the pantheon to the flood to wars, they're all somewhat related.

Not that I know of.

What historical evidence are you referring to?

I'm sure we could take a critical look at it here....

Most of the earliest civilizations formed along rivers. It is not at all surprising that many of them have flood myths.

As I recall, nearly every religion has it's own variation on the flood story, even native Americans. If I can remember where I read that, I'll post the citation.

But if my memory serves, most of the themes in the Christian Bible was borrowed from earlier traditions. Virgin births, children of god(s), resurection after death, etc. all originated in older religions. I would be surprised if you couldn't find similarities.

I would venture to guess that probably the most uniquely new religion in the last 5,000 years with original mythos is Scientology.

The Mormons started with the usual Christian story, but have added a lot of extra material like the presence of a Christian church in pre-Columbian America, none of it supported by archaeology.

Yeah, but it's still based on Christian mythos. What previous religious mythos is Scientology based on?

Note: This is not to be construed that I'm endorsing Scientology in any way, shape, or form. I personally find it to be very icky.
