The difference between hypnotic induction and meditation

I postulate the only difference is expectation. If you have expectation of being hypnotized you might be more open to suggestion and if you have the expectation of just being relaxed you might be relaxed but not unusually open to suggestion.

From my reading on the subject, they are all pretty much the same. Also include the black out BEFORE the baseball hits you above the eye. And waking up under your dirt bike after all the dust has cleared. All very relaxing.

And that droning boring part of a sermon is that way on purpose. It sends your conscious off to never land, leaving your subconscious susceptible to the 'fill the basket' suggestion.

I once spent an interesting couple of weeks reading up on the subject, starting with LGAPs, Large Group Awareness Programs. Like Scientology, EST, and The Forum. They are all out to program you to get them money, yours or that from a new recruit. The point of first part of endless tedium of going over the contract is to put you into the susceptible zone. Then they keep you there, sequestered, for three days with just enough time away for sleep. I was even a guest at a new recruit meeting/demonstration. Afterwards I thanked the presenter for the entertainment, and he responded "then you'll never be a member" and walked off.

"Brainwashing" is an appropriate name for it. But getting into the zone IS relaxing.

Which brings up another idea I have been having. Besides surfing the net, I do two activities. One is to shoot shotguns in clay target games. Another is to play Freecell for speed.

In Freecell, I use two mice, one in each hand, one for it's thumb ball and the other to click. I win about 20 games per hour. But I find that I do better with just the right amount of distracting thought. About like a kid who claims to "concentrate better" while doing homework with loud music blaring. Full concentration, no so good. In either game. I want to try something on the shotgun range, like yelling "PULL!" and reciting the Gettysburg Address while shooting. Shooting is much a mind game, I think I can benefit by playing. Or maybe I am just getting old? Or maybe the lack of rock & roll is making me old? ;)

Pretty much they are.

Ok, I'm not throwing the woo. I'm coming from a stage (small group) hypnosis place. Everyone has seen evidence of this working. I don't believe in "brainwashing."

Perhaps you have an extreme view of what brainwashing is. To me, it is the ability to influence your bias towards their target. They can't make you do anything you would not ever have done, but they can make is sound like a good idea NOW. Hey, I can cluck like a chicken right at my computer without hypnosis, but it would take some influence to get me to do it on stage.

The bigger question is whether they DO influence you, or whether you merely take advantage of the excuse they have given you, and you act out.

Call it convincing, influence, persuasion, or brainwashing. Whatever. Obviously the LGAPs have figured out it works, they still use those techniques.

Reciting a Rosary, spinning a prayer wheel, a welder with his hood down making little spiral puddles. All the same, "being in the now", not thinking about yesterday or tomorrow. Except welders seldom squawk like a chicken or make OOooomm sounds.
