Just One More Question
I want to introduce a new word into the English language. Often when I am watching TV or reading a book on conspiracies, I will see new titles being made-up to add credibility to an "expert" in a particular field. "UFOlogist," "Scholar for Truth," and "Spiritual Teacher" are examples of this, titles that don't actually require any formal education or testing to determine qualifications. I propose a new title "Confusionist," as a way of explaining what their really doing, spreading confusion and preying upon those who are looking for an excuse to believe that everything they have been taught is wrong and they are not responsible for the troubles in their own life. Rather than present an actual theory for what is behind a certain event a Confusionist will point out inadequacies in usually the most complicated part of a prevailing theory, and count on a portion of the audience to be too lazy to confirm their data and/or uneducated enough to buy their analysis. Thus, it is unnecessary for them to actually argue facts or prove them wrong. Just point out how confusing they are to most people.
Confusionists want you to believe that everything you have been taught to believe is wrong. There is a secret Earth from which you have been prevented from ever finding out about. Your life has been controlled from the moment you were born by secret, evil, and sinister forces. You are not paranoid enough. Yes, they really are out to get you. We live in an age when most of us have no trust in the scientific, political, military and business establishments; when we are bombarded with information that many of us are at a loss to understand. The world is full of frightening, inexplicable events that we have trouble comprehending and controlling. For some, knowing something is a "conspiracy" (there's a reason they are sometimes called "plots") helps them feel less powerless. Instead of being unknowing, helpless victims of some dark machinations, they become insiders to the secret. This is what the Confusionist is counting on. That not only are people too lazy to double-check their data, but were looking for someone to cast doubt on a particular world event or troubling theory, and/or give them a scapegoat for their pathetic life.
The motives of the Confusionist is usually either fortune or glory (or both). They have a book to sell, a DVD to offer, or a service they can render (get your mind out of the gutter) for only the paultry sum of $750. What's a few dollars compared to piece of mind or finding a voice that seems to speak everything you been thinking? They become infallible in eyes of their followers, even when their proven wrong. Rather, it is the facts that are wrong. It reaches a point where even when the facts are double checked, there is now a conspiracy against the Confusionist. Reaching this level of admiration is tempting to most people, and if you have a "gift for gab," it is easy to achieve.
Common Phrases:
"We're just asking questions."
"We don't know all the facts."
"The jury is still out on that."
"It just doesn't make sense."
"Common sense tells us..."
"There are somethings that science can't explain."
"I am open-minded to the idea."
I welcome anyone else's thoughts on this.
