The Battle for God The New Fundamentalism

Sounds like a read with some insight. I found this particularly interesting, but maybe only because I've brought this point up before:

"It is a year since the London bombings, an act committed in the name of Islam by a viciously disaffected minority, but which violated the essential principles of any religion. Doubtless with this anniversary in mind, the prime minister has complained that British Muslims are not doing enough to deal with the extremists. The "moderate" Muslims, he said testily, must confront the Islamists; they cannot condemn their methods while tacitly condoning their anger."
_________

Several people have insisted that confronting Muslim extremists was the responsibility of moderate Muslims, but I don't see anyone policing Christian extremists in the U.S. I may be wrong (or poisoning the well) but asking a moderate anything to become more vocal in espousing YOUR values is asking them to become an extremist.

I'm going to disagree.

Lets take a for instance, if a Muslim preacher visits a mosque and starts to preach that the Islamic faith does state that you can kill your fellow citizen it is not extremist for 1) the leaders in that mosque to state that that interpretation of Islamic faith is wrong and 2) to inform other mosques in the area that this preacher is teaching a form of Islamic faith most Muslims do not accept and they shouldn't allow him to preach in their mosque.

That would be moderate Muslims acting in a moderate way against an immoderate Muslim.

There was a case iN wimbledon when the local mosque leaders came across this informed the local police and got ignored, byu they kept going and the police acted and the firebrand was ejected.

A similar situation occurred here in Finsbury Park, the difference being the acted too late and now the "moderates" have got control of the mosque again. Old hookie was not even accpeted as a preacher by the local muslim population they saw him as a trouble bringing interloper.

You aren't looking very hard. When they're expressing opinions, people let them have their way, but when they start advocating violence, which is extremely rare, people do condemn them loudly.

Agreed entirely.

Add to that, there are a large number of Christian organizations who oppose the rabid fundamentalists, particularly the violent groups. Many are actively involved in local Pride events; or, if opposed to things like gay rights, at least teaching against the use of violence to achieve their aims.

just bought the book I do not know what this person politcal views much less care, but the book sounds interesting.
It is. Karen Armstrong knows her stuff, and is very rational. I can't detect any place she's coming from, so to speak. Mind you, I mostly agree with her so I'm no great judge.

In a local primary school a girl became very upset, and her teacher discovered that two Muslim boys had told her she was going to Hell because she wasn't Muslim. The matter was quickly escalated, the boys were talked with, the parents were talked with (they were appalled), the mosque elders were talked with and they resolved the matter via the bum's rush. They're taking more care now. I doubt this is a unique example.

Would that the Catholic Church had responded so quickly to their little problem ...

It really doesn't take much intelligence to figure out what's wrong with that analogy.
