About a year ago I read about an asteroid that is going to hit the earth in 800 years. If this does happen, do you think humans will have developed the technology to deflect or destroy the asteroid?

I seriously doubt that it would be possible to predict such a thing that far in advance.

However, if it could be done, then I would say: Yes, humans will find a way to avert the problem.

This page: The Neo Page lists near Earth objects up to 2178.

800 years is a long time - I doubt if anyone would predict a collision that far ahead, but it would give us plenty of time to do something about it if they did.

If it hits the earth, I guess I would have to think that we would not have developed that technology.

There's one more thing to worry about.

800 years is no way enough time. By then, we might have the technology to divert a large asteroid, but to make it work, we'd need to implement it...right about now. Something slinging in on a highly elliptical orbit, chances of us even spotting it early are pretty slim.

Maybe by the 29th century we will have developed the serenity to accept the things we cannot change.

Second mass extinction linked to impact

That will be the real evolution. Humans that can do that vs. those that can't.

Yeah, but a decision to do anything about it wil be held up indefinitely in U.N. security council..

Fortunately G. Bush V, will say " piss on the U.N.", and launch a bunch of Marines with jack hammers to turn it into space gravel...

We will soooo be on Mars by then, it's not going to be much of an issue.

That won't be a problem, by then planet X will have collided with the earth, or else there is going to be this "rapture" thing that kills everyone anyway (or so I was told)

When in doubt remember the golden rule: Duck and Cover... or hide in a ditch.

Hey, if the asteriod impact doesnt kill you, make sure you jump as hard as you can when you see the shockwave (its the same principle as jumping as hard as you can before the plane crashes into the ground).

A couple of months ago I read an article somewhere which mentioned the 800 year time frame. However, the asteroid discussed was not definitely going to hit the Earth, Instead, it was simply one they couldn't rule out hitting the Earth. I think the astronomers were quoted as saying that on current information, they gave it a 0.3% chance of hitting the Earth. That figure would be refined as they got more tracking data.

There might be something more at the Bad Astronomy site.
