Does anyone listen to the talk radio program, Coast to Coast AM with George Noory? Has anyone read Paul Williams book, "The Al Qaeda Connection?" He has caused quite a furor in some circles and if what he has presented in this book is true, we have cause to be concerned. I think many people reject the picture he is painting because no one wants to believe it. Can we blame them?

During the first half of the program, Paul L. Williams, author of The Al Qaeda Connection, suggested terrorists could launch attacks on the United States during the month long Islamic holiday Ramadan. As evidence he pointed to a May 2005 communiqué between al-Zarqawi and Osama bin Laden which detailed a "Ramadan Offensive" designed to create a "fateful confrontation" with the U.S. and the nation of Islam.

According to Williams, bin Laden possesses a nuclear arsenal and has been smuggling these weapons and Al Qaeda operatives into the U.S. from Mexico using the infamous MS-13 (Mara Salvatrucha) street gang. He said there could be as many as 60 tactical nuclear weapons already positioned in the U.S. for a simultaneous attack on New York, Washington, Miami, Houston, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Chicago.

Williams expects another terrorist attack on America even if a strike does not occur during Ramadan. "We are in a state of war," he explained, pointing out that the "vast majority of Muslims throughout the world support the jihad" against the United States. Osama bin Laden has sworn to kill at least 4 million Americans, he noted. Williams also suggested the U.S. increase border security, detain "special interest aliens" in camps, and look for weapons and Al Qaeda members in radical mosques.

Please allow me to be the first to call bulshit on this. If there was anything even remotely resembling real evidence for OBL having nukes the mainstream media would be all over it, yet oddly only some obscure talk show radio mentions it.

60. Tactical. Nukes.

Evidence? I heard Wal-Mart was guilty of predatory pricing, but surely 60 tactical nukes would still cost a couple of hundred bucks apiece, at least. And isn't there a backlog of orders? The waiting list is, what, six months?

And I thought Mexican street gangs only trafficked in knit ponchos and portraits of Jesus holding a big heart in his palm. And amphetamines. If they are smuggling tactical nukes into the U.S., that would be very out of character for them. Maybe Williams meant the Crips? Their control of the pizza delivery system in the urban centers of United States would be ideal for tactical nuke delivery with only slight modification to their AMC Gremlins.

But I don't know. I have my doubts about this whole story.

I have my doubts too. I mean, what the hell does some short pop singer know about world politics?

I am skeptical any time anyone claims that something is rejected because "people don't want to believe it." People want to believe anything they can, especially if it is really loopy.

And, how do you know "that Paul Williams" isn't also an FBI (or former FBI consultant)? I mean, it isn't like he'd say something....

I guess I should have made the distinction by noting his full name, "Paul L. Williams." Although I don't really know the other Paul's middle name.

He was interviewed on last night's show. I only caught part of the interview but Paul Williams has also been interviewed by Michael Savage on the "Savage Nation." He described the tactical nukes as nuclear suitcases. If you click on "Last Night's Show" in the link, you'll be able to hear it (although I don't know why anyone would want to). It's not a very cheery program. I also found a website with comments on Russia's atomic suitcase bombs that tells more about the weapons:

Gosh, Michael Savage! He must be both important AND levelheaded if he appeared on that show!

The operative word is "Al Quaeda could attack". Not "will" or "will not", but "could.

So if it happens, he's a prophet and we wouldn't listen to his warnings. If it doesn't, hey, he just said it could happen--surely Al Quaeda took notice and changed its plans, so he saved us all.

This sort of "logic" seems to work well for psychics and religious leaders, too.

If you listen to Michael Savage often enough, he kind of grows on you. Those who listen to him regularly discover that he has a soft side. He announced that he's thinking about hiring a co-host. He said that he was getting burned out.

He said that he might be better off discussing movies and books and get away from politics altogether. He gets pretty riled up sometimes about issues. I wouldn't think it would be very good for his blood pressure.

Indeed, as most types of fungi will.

Coast-to-Coast is the brainchild of Art Bell, now more or less replaced by George Noory, and the home of every type of woo-idea out there. Nancy (Planet X) Lieder, Richard (Face on Mars) Hoagland, and every other type of paranormal/UFO believer and conspiracy theorist gets a hearing there.

To be fair, Phil (the Bad Astronomer) Plait has alos been on as a counterweight at times, but the other side is much more heavily favored.

As a solid source of information, I rank it right above the Weekly World News but below the London "Page 3" tabloids.

We only have the Enquirer, the Star and the National Examiner here. My grandmother lived for those papers. She read them in between her crossword puzzles.

His soft side includes calling for the nuking of Mecca and Medina, rounding up every illegal immigrant and deporting them regardless of circumstance, and calling for one language and one culture for America. Nice guy.

By the way, Have you ever encountered Cynicism? This co-host thing is a Publicity Stunt, and you are Falling For It.

He said that he might be better off discussing movies and books and get away from politics altogether. He gets pretty riled up sometimes about issues. I wouldn't think it would be very good for his blood pressure.
Yeah. Looking at this again through Cynic-colored glasses, Savage gets a MUCH greater percentage of his book sales than he does from his radio show. So promoting books, like, say, HIS books, makes logical sense from a capitalist point of view. Ironic that he is always slamming corporate control of everything when he is a corporation. He also makes fun of his leading competitor, calling him 'Crutch Bimbo' or something.

Savage named his society after the guy that rode halfway and then stopped off in a pub. Typical, when his show is equally half-assed.
