not that it makes any difference, but the original lyrics don't say anything about god. "menomale" is a compound of meno (less) and male (bad) something like "it's less bad".

"thank god silvio exists" although a valid interpretation based on popular sayings is not a literal translation.

Well, translation is a more interesting subject to me than a foreign politician who seems to have turned the whole country into a harem by somehow eliminating all other males, so...

I had actually thought that the line "Thank God Silvio exists" was probably literal, even too literal, because in English, people don't say "thank God ___ exists". What we say is "thank God for ___". It made me wonder how that bit with the Ms had "God" in it, because that didn't sound like what I would have expected. Now I guess I was right about that. :) But that means they translated the phrase's intent for the first part, and word-for-word in the second part.

You could do the same idea as "Thank God for ___" in English without God, the closest option to the Italian in this case being "It's a good thing ___". Another option would have been to say we're "lucky" about it. But those don't quite convey the enthusiasm of "Thank God".

FWIW:
I'll say you're on the right track. "Thank god Sylvio exists" is a rather poor translation (but I've seen worse). My old Zingarelli says that meno male is simply an expression for "per fortuna". If I had to translate it, I would use something like "Lucky for us, there's Sylvio", which is as close as you can get to both a literal translation and proper conveyance. "Thank god Sylvio exists" is not bad, but it is not literal or accurate. Just close. Adding god is a wide licence to take as a translator, imnsho. There.

lol... sorry, didn't get it that way. and literal translations don't always make sense, so sometimes it's better to find an equivalent expression, but since every country or region have their own unique expressions there's not one that will work for all the english speaking people of the world. so sure, the one you suggest is as good as any other one.
