Asean: Terrorism has no race or religion

BY HAH FOONG LIAN
VIENTIANE: Asean leaders have adopted a joint declaration to reject any attempts to associate terrorism with any religion, race or nationality.

In the Asean-Japan joint declaration for co-operation to combat international terrorism, the leaders agreed to strengthen measures to counter and prevent the financing of terrorists and terrorist organisations, including the use of alternative means of remittance such as illegal money transfer.

At the 10th Asean Summit yesterday, the leaders agreed to implement appropriate measures that would ensure that terrorists would not use charitable organisations and groups to cover their activities.

Glad to see that after a few years they get around to making these nice statements, but I can't help wondering what they will do when they eventually discover that most terrorism as we know it today does fall into one or more of the above categories? Stick their heads in the sand perhaps?

Makes me think of the International Red Cross today (last donation they receive from me) which can't find torture in Guantanamo, but on the basis of interviews with terrorist detainees they conclude that the treatment is quote "One step below torture". Cool.

How many steps below torture is interrogation allowed to be then?

Furthermore they say that knowledge of detainees mental and physical state was used to unfairly pressure them. Even cooler. Presumably there should be a rule that says never take any advantage of your enemies if you know something they don't know?

There's ethics for you, courtesy of the non political Red Cross.

Sometimes I almost think I'm glad Bush won, for a few moments at a time.
