Hi, I invite you to participate in a simple telepathy test.

At about 16:39 on this Thursday August 9 (Brussels, Belgium time), I wrote carefully one of the four numbers: "1", "2", "3", "4" on my sheet of paper, and I surrounded it with a circle. Then, I wrote it again twice.

I shall repeat this number from time to time during this test.

It was selected using this random number generator: h ttp://psychicscience.org/random.aspx (please remove the space between the "h" and the "t" in this modified URL).

I ask you to write it here (if you think you know it, even with a doubt). You may also answer "I don't know".

So, your answer should be one of the four numbers: "1", "2", "3", "4", or "I don't know".

A comment might also be useful.

Thank you for participating.

NOTE: I should of course come back to tell you what the right answer is, and who answered correctly (if anyone did).

Why not use a totally random number service like http://www.random.org/integers/? Why only limit it to four possible values? How long will this "test" last and why? Why did you consider it important to mention drawing a circle around the number and not other factors like what type of pen or ink color or direction you were facing?

For the purposes of completeness, my answer is "I don't know" for the most obvious reason.

You should md5 hash that result in a sentence and post the hash here before anyone makes a guess. Then after you are done (after a specific number of people have responded, this number should be posted here, say 30) then you post exactly what you put into the hash generator so every one can check to make sure you posted exactly what you were thinking. Otherwise we don't know if you changed your answer to match some result you are looking for.

Here is a hash generator: http://www.md5hashgenerator.com/

If I post this hash: 3f54323e44c82afec637a5b63b804b72

That's a hash for the text string:

The number I thunk was eleventy million.

Putting that into the hash generator will return that hash number above. Change anything in that sentence and you will get a different hash.

I have not the vaguest idea what number you wrote down. Any choice would be a completely blind guess.

Could I suggest, though, that you look into the poll function on the forums? You may need to have made more posts to use it, but there are plenty of more light-headedhearted sub-forums where you can quickly amass some.

4, because drawing a circle around it makes it look like a cool Fantastic Four logo.

9 and three quarters.

Seriously, telepathy doesn't exist and all anyone can do is guess. As you've only written down either 1, 2, 3 or 4, then there's an approximately 25% chance of any of us guessing correctly.

1 no wait 3....ummm or 2..... maybe 4....you know what? I don't know.

Your suggestion is interesting, Drs_Res. However, there might be a problem if the website that produces these cryptographic hashes is not reliable, and for example records all sentences used as initial data to give them to unauthorized people.
