OK. Who took him? I'm going to turn out the lights and whoever did just put him back under the tree where he belongs.
KATHMANDU, Nepal (AP) -- A teenage boy in Nepal whose followers believe he is the reincarnation of Buddha is missing after 10 months of meditation, allegedly without food or water, officials said Saturday.

ETA: I just realized the title of this thread makes it look like the Buddha had his cable service cut. Sorry.

Or, perhaps he died of starvation and his family buried him in secret because they didn't want to admit he was just a regular kid after all?

I finally get the joke now.

He has trascended to the next plane of consciousness... get it?

Good afternoon.

I have a question about this.
According to Buddhist beliefs, once a person reaches the state of enlightenment (bodhi) and becomes a Buddha, he is never reincarnated. To become one with Buddha means ending the continuous cycle of birth, death, and rebirth that it is believed the soul goes through until it reaches enlightenment. Any human being can become a Buddha by realising the true nature of existence, but when one reaches this point, the soul will not be reincarnated.

Then it goes on to say:
People from different walks of life started pouring into the meditation site since last October after Bomjon got publicity as the re-incarnation of Lord Buddha.
So can a Buddha be re-incarnated or what?

Not according to any Buddhist belief system I've ever encountered.

An update from the Buddhist Channel.

Although there's not much news, there's a bit of information about how he disappeared.

“It is learnt that a local resident Sahila Tamang has accompanied him,” the officer said.

The officer also emphasised that it was not an abduction case.

“Based on our preliminary investigation, we are almost certain that Bomjon left the meditation site on his own will,” the official said.

He was probably sick and tired of the entire thing, and went for a burger :p

Sahila Tamang wouldn't happen to be a 16 year old girl would it?

Oh well, hopefully whoever it is has his best interests at heart. This kid is in need of some honest and mature advice.

I think there is an option to reincarnate if you want to hang around for an extra life or two. Say, if you want to help other people achieve enlightenment. After all you now know how to do it. Disclaimer: I'm not a buddhist, so this is all based on vague memories. Maybe from a previous life... ;)

Indeed, they're called Bodhisatvas. Gautama Buddha was a Buddha, not a Bodhisatva.

Good afternoon Ririon.

So you have enlightenment with the option to reincarnate. I can imagine what that lease agreement looks like.

Bodhisattva literally means a "wisdom ('bodhi') being ('sattva')" in Sanskrit (ancient Indian language). It means human beings who postpone their own enlightenment in order to help others achieve enlightenment or Buddhahood.

We refer to human beings not the Buddha himself when we use the term Bodhisattvas.

I do not know, for sure, if there are any such arrangements post enlightenment (Buddhahood), however, given that we believe Buddhahood to be such an elevated, compassionate, aware-of-true-nature and perfect state that I very much doubt if we could influence an enlightened bloke's decisions with any petty arrangements.
