ABC's Brian Ross an alleged journalist "reporter" attempted to smear the Tea Party with the Batman shooting betraying its inherent liberal bias by simply finding the name John Holmes listed as a Tea Party member. Ross had to eat crow on that journalistic coup which he simply drummed up by googling John Homes and Tea Party. That's what passes for journalism in 2012 in the Land of the Free. But Glen Beck turned the tables and by goofling found any number of crimes committed by a man by the name of Brain Ross.

I seem to recall Ross has been the target of some libel lawsuits before for similarly totally stupid behavior.

Ross' comments came after federal officials informed news outlets that the suspect was named James Holmes. George Stephanopoulos threw to him on "Good Morning America" by saying, "You've been investigating the background of Jim Holmes here. You found something that might be significant."

"There's a Jim Holmes of Aurora, Colorado, page on the Colorado Tea party site as well, talking about him joining the Tea Party last year," Ross said. "Now, we don't know if this is the same Jim Holmes. But it's Jim Holmes of Aurora, Colorado."

For what it's worth, I agree it was sloppy journalism. Googling a name without any other relevant information is very likely to produce all kinds of unrelated stuff. In this case there are apparently a couple of hundred James Holmes in the general area. Speculating before investigating is not good journalism.

Likewise I don't think it was particularly responsible of Laura Ingraham to bring a PI onto her show to explain his theory that Holmes fits "to a T" the profile of an Occupy anarchist.

It's a frivolous challenge But I'd put up a lot more to challenge you to cite one example of Rush advocating the murder or anyone. Or in your twisted view, is it vial, stupid horse manure for anyone to believe in the notion of Self Defense and the 2nd Amendment? Please, this Nov. 2nd, stay home.

Trying to tie this to any political speech before there is any indication it was contributory is just ratings grabbing speculation at best and mud-slinging irrelevant propaganda at worst. It's the same as blaming video games, movies, Christianity, lack of Christianity, liberal ideals, conservative ideals, etc as a knee jerk attack.

It's not JOURNALISM at all. Suppose it had been your name and town.

So? Journalism isn't really economicaly viable at this point. Unless you want something goverment funded one way or another it is unrealistic to demand it.

The reality is that TV news has a lot of hours to fill. Sure you and repeat stuff a fair bit but in the end you need some new stuff and bringing in a talking head with a book to promote is a cheap way to do this. Politics allows you to bring in two.

Robert's sloppy spelling is still less of a fail than Brian Ross' sloppy journalism.

At first I thought I saw "vial of horse manure" above But then I reengaged my brian and saw that it was just another misspelling.

Does anybody consider the people who read stuff on TV to be journalists?

No.

I recommend reading Amusing Ourselves to Death: Public Discourse in the Age of Show Business by Neil Postman. The thesis is that television is only suitable as entertainment, and there are troubling implications for our democracy when our news, politics, and even religion are transmitted to us exclusively through that medium. He wrote the book in the 80s, way before the age of cable news, but the warning is eerily prescient and I'm reminded of the book every time a hack like Brian Ross spouts off.

Glenn Beck, of all people, says the following...

“Their job is to report the news not make the news.”

Tell me WHAT IS WRONG with Glenn Beck making such a statement?

Well I challenge you to find anywhere I said rus h advocated murder outright. What I said was that the guy listened to rush's crap about how the movie was an attack on Romney because of the whole bane / Bain Idiocy. (see other thread on forum rush vs batman). Where he makes a totally irrational and unrealistic connection between a character created 20 some years ago and a political agenda of he left. This is patently idiotic. But to some one mentally I'll this makes sense causeEmmyem to react. Why did this guy pick the batman movie after all, why not some other movie? but of course if this proves to be he case. Rush will back peddle and people like you will contort themselves to find excuses why he shouldn't be held accountable.

As for your 2nd a mmendment comment. - there is worlds of difference between self defense and the outright craziness of the NRA and people who live under the delusion that an ar15 is a defense weapon people need to have the right to have.

And be assured I will be voting in November.
