Tam 7?

Is that hotel within walking distance of the main strip? Also, how confirmed is this? Or is this still in discussion among the JREF planners?

July 9 is nice for me because it's not wedged in my usual summer teaching session. I'm tentatively placing it on the calendar, because I fully plan to be at the next TAM, darnit!

Jeff made it sound like it was extremely confirmed (he mentioned a signed contract with the hotel).

It is a hellish long way from the strip (especially in July weather). If you have ever been to Las Vegas, it is further from the most southern end of the strip (Mandalay Bay) as most of the strip is from downtown (Fremont Street). Definitely not walking distance unless you are riding a camel. You will need a car or taxi. I am not sure if it is on any of the main bus routes (and am too lazy to look it up at the moment), but that might be your best bet if you want to play tourist.

I suspect that the JREF got a good rate on the place as they will essentially have a captive audience for the duration of the meeting. That said, it is a far nicer place to stay hotel-wise than the previous casinos (free WiFi!).

ETA: (Why on earth do I keep making paranthetical statements?)

And also, extremely confirmed.
Jeff, Hal and Randi all told us/me that is was for sure going to be then and there

No. It's almost 9 miles south of the Flamingo Hotel, where this year's TAM was. The closest strip hotel to the South Point would be Mandalay Bay, which is roughly 5 1/2 miles away. But Jeff mentioned hooking people up with shuttles and such. I'm sure carpooling will be happening, too.

Also, how confirmed is this?

Sounded like a definite.

No worries (there are plenty of us who make parenthetical remarks all the time).

Thanks for the info. If I attend TAM7 next year, it will be my first trip to Vegas. I imagine I might want to play tourist a little bit, though not too much. Does TAM stay active enough to keep you at the conference site most of the time?

It does me, but then I don't party quite as hearty as I did when I was in my forties. SouthPoint seems like a very nice place, from what I've seen on Poker After Dark. To me the off-the-strip location is a plus, not a minus.

Probably too much time around me. (You know for sure I'm contagious if you start using up all the exclamation points!)

The best part is that my husband and I are owners at the Grandview, literally next door to the South Point. We just bought more property, so we might be able to reserve six four-person suites for next TAM....

well and you really don't do much walking for any distance at a TAM in summer! I did find I spent a lot more on cabs than other TAMs. The heat made my usual long strip walk impossible.

Plus, there is so much to do with TAM. If you are going to Vegas to do Vegas stuff plan it for before and after TAM. Because during TAM you will be very busy, and if you do something in the evening it will be with a big group you meet up with at TAM. Taxi sharing galore!

Sounds great to me. The strip is nice, but I hardly went out because I was having so much fun at the Flamingo.

South Point's got just about everything too, a theater, salons, equestrian center, decent buffet. The interior is very spacious as well.

South Point is the possible location of the first ever JREF bowling tournament.

Should such a tournament take place, a new scoring system will be required. A gutter ball will score homeopathic points.

Sunday I discovered the the bus route "The Deuce" goes all the way from Fremont Street, down through the entire Strip and then down to the South Strip where Tam 7 will be held, so this would be an option. Its $2 per trip, $5 for a day pass.

I would guess that we would have a special bus for us to atleast the Penn and Teller show.

Good information, thanks, though I do wonder what the Las Vegas public-transit experience is like.

Ah, yes -- the "special" bus. Heh. :D

The Deuce is primarily populated by tourists, so it is usually fun, crowded, and light-hearted. They keep it very clean and well-run, and I have never had any problems with it, even late at night, traveling alone between the high-traffic stops.

On weekend nights, it is very crowded, so if you do not do well with claustrophobia or standing for long periods of time, I would not recommend it during the high-volume hours.

Just as a side note, the $5 all-day pass will work on any of the bus routes, not just the Deuce. It is handy if you want to check on some off-strip goodies such as the Rio, Palms, or outlet store malls (cheap goodies for sale!).

Does this mean it might be possible to have a party that goes past midnight?

This was my third Vegas TAM and while I have a short list of things/places I want to see/do (Fremont Street being one of them) I still haven't done any of them and with the exception of going over to Caesar's for the Forum party, didn't leave the Flamingo between Thursday afternoon and Monday morning. And you can verify with my roomie that I did not ensconce myself in our room the whole time.

South Point is the possible location of the first ever JREF bowling tournament.

Assuming there's some left hand drilled 12 or 14 pounders, I'm in.

This looks like the place to have a party.

If you have the party indoors, you could prevent another meltdown by bringing in a ton of ice. I looked up the numbers. It takes 2000 lbs. of ice to counter the body heat given off by 110 lightly active people over 4 hours.
