taking multimedia speakers to the UK?

I don't know where to put this question. Im going to the UK and plan to take as a gift a set of multimedia speakers for my daughter... they are fairly big (Klipsch Promedia 4.1) but I plan to put them in the luggage.

I couldn't find any restriction regarding taking them, but well, I better ask... Thanks!

I don't know about any restrictions regarding speakers in luggage; but if you haven't thought of it already, I would make sure you have a power supply for that speaker system compatible with UK mains.

Good call, I assumed, like many many electronics, that I could use it anywhere just having the compatible plug.. I was mistaken... Nor my Promedias nor my Gigaworks can be used in the UK... :(

What about converters? http://www.ebay.com/bhp/220v-to-110v-converter

Be careful ... you'd need a US to UK converter, 110 to 220 ;)
I'm not sure if it matters with that speaker system (as it didn't for a guitar amplifier I brought to Germany and used a converter with, but that was 27 years ago and it was a pure analog device), but in addition to the voltage difference, the power frequency is also different. North American power is 60 Hz (cycles per second), European is 50 Hz. ETA- That system appears to have pure analog circuitry, so I think it might be okay to use with a 220-240 vac to 110-120 vac converter (I've qualified that because I can't find any solid info about the power supply circuit itself).

Thanks. I have no idea about this, found those converters but well... In the back of the amplifier states just "BASH" technology, and I know it is a digital amplifier, but I have no idea about the power circuit requirements..

and I'm still not sure about I can bring them in regular luggage? Apparently, you can bring anything unless it is prohibited.. I think...

How about shipping them separately (i.e., UPS, or FedEx) -- might be cheaper than airline baggage charges, and you'll avoid any TSA headaches.

Yep, you're correct, it has a digital/analog hybrid amp. The article I read last night misled me, but now I'm looking at the actual Klipsch page about it.

Have you already got the speakers? If not, why not just buy a pair of speakers for your daughter in the UK, using both the money you were going to use for the speakers, and the money you were going to pay for excess luggage?

If you really want to take the speakers on the plane, asking the airline you are flying with is by far the best way to find out, as different airlines may have different regulations. I know from experience airlines have quite different policies on musical instruments, for example.

Also, would low temperatures in hold be potentially harmful to the speakers? (I have no idea if it would or not, but it just occurred to me to ask)

Already have them.. and.. I have been looking for computer speakers this quality, and there is NOTHING in the market right now that has the same power, bass, mids range, etc... Regarding temp, well, they were designed to work in the US so.. I don't expect a problem, good idea though.
