NEW YORK — Teenagers' use of Ecstasy (search) dropped 25 percent over the past two years, a decrease that translates into an additional 770,000 teens rejecting the once-trendy drug, a study found.

The study, released Wednesday by the Partnership for a Drug-Free America (search), also found that teen drug use overall had declined, especially involving marijuana, LSD and methamphetamine, researchers said.

According to the partnership's 16th annual survey, 9 percent of teens used Ecstasy in 2003, a significant decline from the 12 percent in 2001, when use of the drug hit its peak.

I doubt this has to with an anti-drug trend and more to do with availability. 3 years ago there was an abundance of (relatively) cheap and good X, today there's sh!t. In fact, I havent come across X in the market for a while.

Never mind, stupid question...the heroin deaths of our favorite past rock stars hasn't stopped current rock stars from shooting up, so why would severe brain damage stop people from doing Ecstacy?

So, it has nothing to do with the fact that X puts holes in your brain?

I read that it was habitual, long-term use of X that caused such damage. Is that inaccurate?

Was that the study where it turned out that the claims being made about the results wern't quite true or the one where they tested the wrong drug?

Beats me, I can't remember.

I just heard that they are going to test X on Post traumatic Stress disorder patients. If they find out it works no one will be able to get it because it is illegal.

My question is what is the newest designer drug of choice (replacing X which was the drug of choice for the bunch no longer teens) for today's kiddies, or is Hex right about cheap heroin? :(

I supsect that most of them lied on the survey or just plain forgot that they had used it.

I heard its because now their parents are doing it and so its become uncool.

Yes, they were using the wrong amphetamine, so something like 60% of the chimps either keeled over or had to be sacrificed to put them out of their misery. Big bruhaha about how dangerous MDMA is. Tabloid press goes mad over 'brain damaged generation' bla blah blah Oops. Not MDMA at all. Of course, it was pretty obvious that something was wrong with the study as 100,000s of people take it every week in the UK alone and there are scarely a tiny fraction of 1% deaths, let alone 60%!

Regardless, its certainly not good for you.

Seems like the same has happened in the UK

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/3293615.stm
...snip...

The number of young people taking ecstasy has fallen for the first time while cocaine use is on the rise, according to new Home Office figures.

The British Crime Survey (BCS) reveals changing patterns among the one million Class A drug users in England and Wales, with ecstasy use down 20%.

...snip...

Had a quick look for a story I'm sure I've read this year but I can't find a link to it. (Perhaps I dreamt it!)

That story was that the price of ecstasy in UK and Europe had dropped so much that the drug dealers were looking to the US as an export market. Let's hope Bush doesn’t slap a tariff on it!

'S funny; people've been saying this since the 1990's.

Well that's the kicker; let's compare and contrast usage to casualty ratios for ecstasy and alcohol, particularly amongst teens and young adults. Not that I'm advocating either.

The other problem Billy, is that if you take a pill well, sure, it might have some MDMA in it but it might not. It might have any of a number of different active substances in it like 2-CB or or sh!t.... I hold the opinion that most 'ecstacy' death are not caused by MDMA at all but by the other crap wots in them pills.....

The study suffered from a few flaws. The main one is that the researchers were using methamohetamine rather than MDMA. These sorts of errors can skew the results of your study slightly.

And

The deaths attributed to MDMA use are primarily caused not by MDMA itself but rather dehydration/exhaustion and/or crap dealers cut the drug with. But hey, doesn't matter how many people your policies kill as long as we fight this horrible scourge.

Typically, when usage of one drug declines, then the usage of some other drug increases.

I have heard recently that heroin is making a big comeback since it is so cheap, and so potent that one does not need to inject it.

I dont think its so much the excercise or dehydration, more likely its stuff like this: http://www.erowid.org/chemicals/dxm/dxm.shtml

When I lived in Cape Town, two kids died after taking DXM. After taking one pill and waiting for an hour, nothing happened so they took a few more. Oops.

I can only recall a couple of incidents which could be directly blamed on the MDMA - causes the body to overheat or something? All the rest AFAIK were either idiocy on the part of the user; such as excessive water ingestion leading to "drowning", or the guy with a previously diagnosed heart condition or bad luck. On the other hand, it's pretty predictable that if you drink too much alcohol, you end up in casualty, or the morgue. Again, not that I'm advocating either, I just find it interesting that people tend to have far less respect for alcohol than for the pill they're necking.

My understanding is the the drug essentially shuts down the kidneys, so you never have a need to urinate. So people on X should only drink enough liquid to replace what they perspire.
