I wonder if he has (had?) been seriously ill for sometime and that explains some of the shenanigans surrounding the recent "election"?

According to Haaretz:

This is not the first time that Khamenei's health has been the subject of rumor; he has been said to have suffered from health problems for years. But these rumors have also had no formal confirmation.

Doubtful. More likely is that this is a game being played by the IRGC to help try and identify those protesters still doing the Twitter thing. They've been spreading misinformation and outrageous lies since late June this year, attempting to poison the information well coming out of Iran. The less accurate the information that gets reported on, the more Iran can make the case to the Iranian public that the West just likes to lie about Iran. Not a particularly savvy tactic in a world where communication and information formats are so numerous and cheap, at least not for the purpose of manipulation, but the regime has a habit of treating every problem it meets like a nail and hammers at it enthusiastically regardless of efficiency.

My guess is that this news is possibly a distraction from the fact that the regime is planning on hanging three of the protesters.

I just checked most of the sources I had with Iranian contacts. No indication at all that Khamenei is dead or even sick.

Is Ledeen in on the conspiracy?

Good. Another evil man has died. Hopefully he will be replaced by an Ayatollah who is a little more moderate and wants to engage the West, rather then destroy it and isolate Iran.
:bwall

Two Iranian-American friends tell me the rumor, obviously, unverified, going around Tehran is Khamenei fell into a coma and has died.
