Supernatural Powers from TM?

Hello,

I have frequently read claims that TM Sidhi purports to teach people how to fly, become invisible, and walk through walls. Is this information officially published somewhere? Has Maharishi been quoted saying these things.

I found a page that collects a lot of quotes from him. While some of them are obscurantist, utopianistic, or just plain strange, a lot of them are charmingly appealing.

But, I do feel that his organization is not founded on true science, but rather on his charisma and his charm. He seems to offer "scientifically verified" solutions to world problems with simple meditation, yet I've never seen any real evidence of this.

I grew up being intrigued by science, especially Carl Sagan's works, but also interested in Maharishi because a family member was interested in it and practiced TM. I never practiced it myself, and certainly doubt flying, levitating, invisibility, etc. Truly ridiculous stuff.

Are there any very good articles or links aside from TranceNet and the like that expose any bizarre things about TM and Maharishi? Anything in a major publication?

I am writing some articles that compare the reasoned, humble, willing-to-admit-fault, human approach of someone like Sagan to the larger-than-life, absolutely-perfect, cult-of-personality persona of Maharishi.

Thank you,
Josh

You're heading the right way in actually doing research! It's all out there to be found - go for it!

I did TM back in the 70s. They did make claims about if I remember increased intelligence I think plus other benefits when so many percent of the population practiced TM. They had graphs etc to make it look good. In Australia they targeted the Medical Professions to partake of their courses.
I found some benefit just as a relaxation technique. I don't practice TM anymore but could easily slip back into it as a relaxation technique only.
They certainly seemed to have gone off the rails since I did their course. Talk of flying and what do they say become invisible and walk through walls.

Wow, I think I may start back again, I may be able to claim Randi's million dollars.:)

TM superpowers my ...

I learnt TM many years ago At Mentmore Towers, at the time their UK head office.

One sunny evening I arrived for the class early and looked through the window of their "flying" room - a large room full of mattresses - to see about ten people hopping cross-legged about the room. They clearly had all the levitation abilities of a housebrick and would have had seriously sore rears if not for the mattresses as their landings sucked! They had all basically deluded themselves that at the point of zero gravity between going up and falling back down then for the briefest of moments they were indeed levitating!

The reason that they couldn't remain in the air (or actually do any of their other claimed Sidhi abilities) is apparently our fault as the world's energy is simply too negative and literally "brings them down" right now!

They seem to be kindly solving the terrorist threat for us at the moment -"In his first press conference in seven years, His Holiness Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, on Friday 28 September, presented a field-tested, peaceful approach based on Vedic technologies of defence to eliminate terrorism and create permanent world peace" but I'm sure that they could still kindly teach you how to hop if asked, for just a mere few thousand pounds.

Yikes. I've seen them doing that on a documentary - they look very silly.

Maybe I don't understand how the solar system moves well, but if you suddenly were not affected by gravity, wouldn't the earth fly out from under you at an incredible speed due to both its rotation on its axis and its revolution around the sun?

These silly boogers actually fielded candidates for State and Federal elections over here some years ago, the idea being that "Natural Law" would make all the difference. Well, none of them were ever elected and nowadays they seem to have lost interest.

Maharishi's TM seems to have evolved into a $cientology-like enterprise -- offer them BS and and they will flock to our courses. Well, meditation can be a powerful way to find inner peace, and it can be learned from a book, if you are ready for it. No need at all for these shysters and their grandiose claims.

Maharishi is pure BS but please do not take TM as meditation in general. TM is even a trademark , is a Maharishi "product". Meditation in general has many proven benefits as mentioned above, like relaxation, and self control improvement. Pitty Maharishi makes silly claims about superpowers or things like advising students of his university to abandon their medication and keep TM as their only treatment.

When TM initially began making public claims about "yogic flying", they released photos of smiling young people apparently hovering about 6 inches off the ground in the "lotus" position.
I seem to recall a cover photo on "Life" magazine.

Randi promptly duplicated the photos with a volunteer and strobe photography, and the TM organization promptly quit running the photos. However, they continue to soak the gullible "students" who sign up for flying lessons.

Thanks for the video, CynicalSkeptic! That almost looks like an event on MXC.

I can practically hear the Captain blow the whistle and shout "Get it on!"

Amazing how the second dude's hair hasn't been released from Gravity, and is pointing up, almost as if he is coming back down from hopping up.

Thanks for the responses so far. Some good links and info.

I now believe that just about all religious groups and "movements" are out there trying to make people feel better about their own lives and make them feel empowered, as if they have control over things they just might not have any real control over.

It seems to me a shame, however, that most of them end up getting people to focus so much on their _own_ selves and so few of them open their eyes to the real pains and struggles of others around them that they could help simply by being a friend rather than a dogmatist. They end up making them feel "enlightened" or "superior", which is really just a form of pseudo-confidence that props up the believer's sense of self without them having to actually accomplish any true, and often painful, growth in their interactions with the rest of society.

Facing reality is difficult, painful, and results in uncertain outcomes, yet what lies on the other side, even if not what we expected or dreamed, will make us grow and become better people.

We grow and become better people when we grow and become better people.

There is no "other side." There is here, now. Sleep through it or be awake. Your choice.

I'm a trained teacher of TM and left the organization just as the Siddhi program was starting. We were indeed told these things.
