Hi all,

I have a strange problem with my PC. My motherboard has a built ac97 audio card and I've also added a yamaha sw1000xg (which i always use).

Since taking my pc to have a new motherboard fan fitted, the audio now stutters when playing music or videos. I'm not entirely sure but it may get worse when, say, a virus scan is going on.

My processor btw is 3ghz so there should be no issue with overloading.

So that i could listen to internet radio, i switched over to the on board ac97. This worked fine without stuttering but freezes my PC after about 10 minutes.

Jesus, you just can't win!

My PC is also duel boot (both XP), and the same problems happen on the other side as well.

Has anyone experienced these kind of problems before?

Can a processor be fried but still work some of the time?
Could it be a psu problem?
memory?

Just to add, i have reseated all my cards and memory and reinstalled both audio drivers.

Cheers

eta: When i say motherboard fan, i mean a fan that sits on the motherboard, not the beast that hangs over the processor.

Is everything back to normal if you remove the motherboard fan ?

Good point! No idea why i didn't try that, i'll try it now....

Well, I’m tentatively going to say that’s worked. I say tentatively because sometimes the PC won’t stutter for 30 mins or so.

What is looking good though is that, something I didn’t mention before, I can now plug my phone into the USB port and it is recognized.

I had no idea something that looks like it draws so little power could cause so many problems.

Do you think it’s a problem with my PSU or maybe the fan could be wired up wrongly?

Thanks El G

Well, if it turns out that the problem was indeed the fan, then I'd guess it interferes with the PCI slot's power. Whether that's a problem of the fan, the PSU or even the motherboard, I couldn't tell. But it's possible that only one PCI slot suffers while others may have no problem. Perhaps it would be worth the trouble to try another slot.

If your fan is drawing power off the mobo, try picking up an adapter to allow it to pull juice from a spare rail from the ps itself.

Thanks for all your help guys.

The stuttering did come back but it wasn't as bad as it was before.

I solved the problem by cleaning out dust and fluff from the PSU and the CPU Fan. There was literally a hand full of fluff that i scraped from the CPU combo fan

I also noticed that the PSU didn't look too healthy so i may need to replace that at some point.
