Study Finds Satirists Better News Providers Than Cable Network

When satirists communicate facts better than the "real" "journalists," we have a problem.

Pew judged the levels of knowledgeability (correct answers) among those surveyed and found that those who scored the highest were regular watchers of Comedy Central's The Daily Show and Colbert Report. They tied with regular readers of major newspapers in the top spot -- with 54% of them getting 2 out of 3 questions correct. Watchers of the Lehrer News Hour on PBS followed just behind.

Virtually bringing up the rear were regular watchers of Fox News. Only 1 in 3 could answer 2 out of 3 questions correctly. Fox topped only network morning show viewers.

Fox may have a copyright on "Fair and Balanced" but I think they need to switch to "Completely Uninformative." Still, it's bad news all around. It seems that Americans are becoming increasingly unaware of the real world.

Study after study shows that FOX is crap for news; and yet people still watch it. Perhaps it is because they are not interested in forming informed opinions.

I think if you can make someone laugh and learn you are improving thier recall ability. I'm sure the average viewer pays far closer attention to john stewart than the 5 o'clock news. Then people who watch the news hour... well they are ones who are interested in news comprehension anyways.

I thought this was interesting:

Men scored higher than women, and older Americans did better than younger, on average. Democrats and Republicans were about equally represented in the most knowledgeable group but there were more Democrats in the least aware group.

Might go against your intial assumptions of the study; if you think of fox news viewers as being mostly male and republican.
 
Ecological fallacy. Watching the Daily Show and The Colbert Report doesn't mean using them as a news source.

/they're a pretty good source for comments on the news though

If so, then correcting for demographics would put Fox news viewers in an even worse light.
