MASON, Ohio - Some Mason High School students thought it would be fun to turn loose a menagerie of birds and animals in the school as a senior prank.

But the prank went bad and a peacock died.

Now, up to 10 seniors could be barred from graduation ceremonies and four may be charged with theft and animal cruelty, officials in this town 19 miles northeast of Cincinnati said on Wednesday.

Warren County Sheriff Tom Ariss said the peacock, rabbit and five chickens were among several birds and animals stolen from a nearby farm.

A few years before I graduated, some kids at our school let loose 100 mice on the last day of school. People were throwing them against the wall and kicking them, it was pretty gross. I also heard that at another school, some kid let loose a chicken in the school, apparently, it took the school administrators all day to catch.

As an aside, my son went to a school that had a small farm attached. There was, for example, a tame goose that just wandered around the classrooms as it liked. No one ever bothered it. I thought it was really good.

Is it that the animals got species-specific graduation ceremonies which implicitly excluded humans, or that calling animals "animals" is an example of socially acceptable bigotry?
