I have been on the Atkins diet for several weeks now, eating almost zero carbohydrates. All protein and fat. In the last 3 weeks, I might have farted 4 times, TOTAL.

Since I used to fart 4 times a day on average on my regular diet, I'm guessing that the vast majority of farts must come from carbohydrates?

I do believe fart gas is produced from the breakdown of primarily vegetable material yes.

Now, what about this scenario?

A fair proprtion of methane is produced by ruminents (which you are eating so transfering your fart load to one step lower in the food chain). Now if we stuck a pipe up the arse of every cow, sheep and goat and harvested the methane, surely our reliance of fossil fuels could end?

Well, I'm not a big veggie eater, but I used to be a prolific farter, so farts must come from carbohydrates like bread too. We all know about beans, of course.

And now the bad news:

Hi protein makes your breath stink:

7) Ketosis - This is a state that the body goes into when it does not have enough carbohydrates. Substances called "ketones" are formed in the body and these can dull the appetite, may cause nausea and bad breath.

Of course, there are more severe potential side effects listed on that page.

Enjoy!

I count my own farts!

So when you have an unusually long fart that oscillates in intensity (like frrrrRRRRRrrrrRrrrrRRRRRRRRRRRrrrrrrrrt), is it considered one fart or a series of farts... I think it'd be one long fart... and a good one I might add.

I like counting the ones that occur with each step taken. This is particularly enjoyable if you're going upstairs at the time, and even more so if some poor sap is closely following. You can bet if you lose count, they won't have!!

:D

Ahh, yes! Do you know the situation when you are in a large room with other people, and you need to break wind: So you let it go while walking determinedly across the room on order to dilute the smell, so nobody will notice... or if they do, they won't know the source. And then, midway, somebody stops you to have a chat :c2:
