OK, here is the low down. I am dating this women who now tells me that about 4 years ago she had sex with a guy who had hep C and herpes. They did not always use a condom. She has been tested twice, most recently last year, and all tests were negative. She claims the doctor and nurse told her that if she had either she would have symptoms by now.
I am completely STD free and plan on staying that way. So is it true that after 4 years she is totally disease free or can the disease still be there and just not show any symptoms?

First, I wouldn't just take someone's word that they are negative for STD's. Ask for the paperwork. And show your paperwork.

As for Hepatitis C, the risk of being infected through sexual contact is very low.

It takes up to 6 months after infection for the blood antibody test to become positive ("window period") . Because of this, false negative results can occur. If there is a high suspicion of Hepatitis C infection, another test ,PCR (Polymerase chain reaction) is able to demonstrate the actual virus replicating in the bloodstream, up to 6 weeks after infection.

I'd say if she hasn't tested positive after 4 years, she's safe.

The rate of sexual transmission is believed to be small. For example, only 2 partners of 400 infected Irish women had the virus after 20 years.

The virus is spread efficiently via blood, e.g. up to 75% of haemophiliacs who required regular blood transfusions have become infected.

Eighty percent of intravenous drug users are infected. It can even be spread by dried blood

As for herpes:

HSV blood tests are confusing to patients and to clinicians as well. Unfortunately there are many claims about blood tests--some less accurate than others. This has led to confusion about when blood tests should be done and which tests are accurate. This area of testing is so important, we have devoted an entire section of this website to providing the most current information on HSV serology. Click here to read more about HSV type specific serology.

Yeah I remember her. Geeze was it four years ago? Anyhow say hi to her for me and tell her the symptoms are all under control now.

And can I have my CDs back?

:D

haha just kidding of course. I spent many many years in a relationship with a woman who had herpes and I never contracted it. Mind you, if we'd actually had sex the chances would have increased enormously.
