‘State of Denial’

It's been leaked earlier in the week. The NY Times got a copy and published excerpts. Among the revelations are allegedly Laura Bush's plea to the prez to can Rumsfield, Henry Kissinger giving advice to the prez on Iraq and other stuff. There is chaos in the White House over the handling of the war withthe president even issuing a pre-emptive refusal to his dog Barney should the pooch advise him to pull out of Iraq. (yes, Bush actually said this).

You know, I really want to like Rumsfeld, but every time I hear more about him and his policies, I just wish he would resign. It simply seems he's one of the main reasons we're in our current quagmire. Perhaps it would be best if he wasn't allowed to make it any worse than it already is.

I read an article about this in the Sydney Morning Herald. The part that stood out to me is the part about GWB and one of his advisors sharing their love of fart jokes during meetings. That speaks volumes about the intelectual callibre of the Pres.

But, Bob everyone knows it's not smart to change Secretary of Defense in the middle of a war. ;)

Yes, a clear sign of weakness. Worse, defeat! But perhaps Rumsfeld is too close to the conflict to see the errors in his strategy. Though I get the uneasy feeling that to him this is a pesky side effect of the initial war and he simply doesn't care enough to worry about it. Perhaps someone with a fresh outlook could be more effective... or simply care.

Rumsfeld will "resign" when it is clear that it would benefit the Republican party, not before.

It isn't just Rummy in denial. Bush is in charge according to Woodward's interviews. The whole batch of 'em are in denial but Woodward says it is Bush who can't accept the facts. Apparently both Bush and Rumsfeld don't want to even hear anything that contradicts their view of Iraq and how things are going there.
