Ok so the results aren’t actually in yet, but I looks like Labour are going to have a decent workable majority for the next parliament.

It is an accepted fact in British politics that Tory leaders who loose elections, don't stay leaders for long, so,

Who’s next?

Fox?
Letwin?
Redwood?
someone else?

let the wild speculation commence...

Howard wont be pushed. The tories can't afford to change leader again

since when has common since been a deciding factor in picking Tory leaders?

The war and general disaffection with Blair could have handed the Tories the election, Howard failed to capitalize on that. I don't think he'll be forgiven.

It is obvously time for the Tories to dissinter Churchill--no matter that he's been dead 30 years, he's still probably a better leader than what the Tories can bring out now.

He's probably not quite as dynamic a speaker these days, however.....

of course Churchill started out as a Liberal (member of eth liberal party not a "liberal" if you get my meaning.)

His government during wwII was a "national" government, a coalition of all parties, not a Tory government.

Churchill is (as far as I know) the last Tory leader to loose an election (1945), but remain leader (and even win a second term as prime minister (1950)).

Although he was pretty far gone by 1950- there is a story that he even had a stroke during a cabinet meeting during his 1950's government, and nobody noticed until the meeting was over

Churchill, great war leader - not much cop in peacetime.

Just putting in a word for the local boy, Francis Maude if they decide to change tack.

Didn’t know he was still alive!

Mind you for the wild card (and the entertainment factor) may I suggest Miss Anne Widdecombe?

Actually, I've just listened to a well-thought-out and impassioned suggestion that what the Tory party needs is for Portillo to take advantage of the next suitable by-election to come in and sweep the party off to victory like the knight in shining armour. He's still a relatively young man, he's not tainted by the recent bad decision-making, and the new, improved, post-Enfield Portillo might be just what's needed.

Hmmmmm......

Rolfe.

As far as I remember, the "improved post-Enfield Portillo" reverted to type as soon as he got back into parliament in 1999.

Try this page for what is perhaps a more considered set of choices.

I'm tickled pink by the suggestion of Malcolm Rifkind. OK, if he gets it, then Brown gets the Labour leadership, and Charlie Kennedy doesn't look as if he's going anywhere any time soon.... Get my drift?

Rolfe (tired of being told that the Scots are too stupid to have any shot at being self-governing).

And that's supposed to help - how?

Rolfe.

Looking at his website, he may be sort of their version of Kilroy, but then again maybe not, he believes in

"traditional American values that are rooted in the conservative principles of national sovereignty, economic patriotism, limited government, and individual freedom. "

He seems to be protectionist and isolationist, but unlike Killroy, he is very anti NAFTA, perhaps he wants to join the EU instead?
;)
