T.C. Pinckney envisions, hopes and prays for a mass exodus of millions of Southern Baptist children from the nation's public schools. He'd like to see them taught at Christian schools or at home by their parents.
"We're pursuing a classical and Christian model," says the church's education pastor, Jason Karr, who oversees Riverbend Academy, where Latin lessons begin in third grade, creationism trumps evolution, the Bible is considered the foundation of all knowledge, and God is part of every lesson plan.
"We believe in absolutes. We believe God created everything," says Karr. And, while academic excellence is the standard, the children are taught "to think through the lens of Scripture."
Southern Baptists debate value of public education
Public school may be bad, but this is a bit too much. A step closer towards the Saudi Arabian madrassas that get (and deserve) so much bad press.
