Inside sources confirm what has widely been rumored, Sen. Feinstein is showing severe signs of senility and is resisting calls to step down.

But many others familiar with Feinstein’s situation describe her as seriously struggling, and say it has been evident for several years. Speaking on background, and with respect for her accomplished career, they say her short-term memory has grown so poor that she often forgets she has been briefed on a topic, accusing her staff of failing to do so just after they have. They describe Feinstein as forgetting what she has said and getting upset when she can’t keep up. One aide to another senator described what he called a “Kabuki” meeting in which Feinstein’s staff tried to steer her through a proposed piece of legislation that she protested was “just words” which “make no sense.” Feinstein’s staff has said that sometimes she seems herself, and other times unreachable. “The staff is in such a bad position,” a former Senate aide who still has business in Congress said. “They have to defend her and make her seem normal.”

This paragraph especially painful:

Schumer had several serious and painful talks with Feinstein, according to well-informed sources. Overtures were also made to enlist the help of Feinstein’s husband, Richard Blum. Feinstein, meanwhile, was surprised and upset by Schumer’s message. He had wanted her to step aside on her own terms, with her dignity intact, but “she wasn’t really all that aware of the extent to which she’d been compromised,” one well-informed Senate source told me. “It was hurtful and distressing to have it pointed out.” Compounding the problem, Feinstein seemed to forget about the conversations soon after they talked, so Schumer had to confront her again. “It was like Groundhog Day, but with the pain fresh each time.” Anyone who has tried to take the car keys away from an elderly relative knows how hard it can be, he said, adding that, in this case, “It wasn’t just about a car. It was about the U.S. Senate.”

Living in a Gerontocracy is fun!

Just wait till it’s Biden’s turn, after he tries to drive the Beast to the nearest Country Kitchen Buffet.

You don't have to convince me. 2020 was the battle of the geezers.

Rep Goehmert had a ****** tooth fall out while giving a speech. McConnell hands look like they were rotting from gangrene. Dottering old fools trying to find their offices after getting lost on the way to the bathroom to change their diapers.

If this were a work of fiction, it would be considered ham fisted. A decaying empire lead by people who are literally decaying before our eyes.

Come on, man!

Don't most forms of government tend to lean toward the old being in charge? Looking historically I can't really think of any that don't wind up with "elders" in charge.

I'm not saying it's not a problem, I'm just saying it's not a new problem, nor unique to modernity. Or the US.

Old is one thing, geriatric another.

Why is America governed by old people? Maybe because it has so many elderly voters.

The American electorate is older than it’s been for at least half a century. One reason is aging Boomers. The other is the greater tendency (despite a rising mortality rate) of people who make it into old age to go on living. By 2030, every living Boomer will be elderly (that is, age 65 or older), and by 2035, the Census Bureau projects, the elderly will outnumber minors for the first time in U.S. history.

I think this speaks volumes about the quality of character of Democrats vs. Republicans.

A democrat politician shows signs that they may no longer be competent... those in charge attempt to address the issue, to the benefit of both the party and country.

Donald Trump shows signs that he may not be mentally competent? Republicans ignore the issue, do everything they can to enable him, and attempt to engage in "whataboutisms". But at least they got Drunky McRapeface and the Stepford Wife on the court. That makes having someone with significant mental impairment in charge worth it.

President vs Senator is apples and oranges. I very much doubt the Democrats would remove their own POTUS unless they were unable to stop drooling on themselves. We'll probably get a chance to find out in the next 4 years.

Hmmm, I wonder who would become the ranking Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee if DiFi steps down?

Biden wouldn't have been the candidate if that were true.

Unless by "address the issue" you mean try to keep him hidden in his basement.

It's amazing what can be spun out of a speech impediment and a lack of willingness to gather large crowds during a pandemic by supporters of a man who thinks that saying "Person, Woman, Man, Camera, TV" while looking at all of the things those nouns denote is the height of mental acuity.

Thank you for illustrating my point perfectly.

You see, Biden doesn't really exhibit any significant mental decline. Yes, he does occasionally get numbers/words wrong (and Fox news and other right-wing sources will early jump on that), but those sorts of things will happen whenever anyone (regardless of age) is under the type of scrutiny that a presidential candidate is, and he usually picks up his mistakes and corrects it. (As for his "hidden in the basement... Biden actually made a lot of media appearances, but given Covid-19, the responsible thing to do would be to avoid large crowds, something Stubby McBonespurs failed to understand.)

On the other hand, Trump's mental blunders are much more frequent and serious than Biden's, AND he never corrects himself. Yet the MAGAchuds ignore all that when they engage in their 'whataboutisms' when they try to claim Biden is "too old/senile".

So, again....
Democrats: taking the right path in attempting to address the mental decline of a fellow Democrat in an important position in the senate
Republicans: Ignoring the mental decline of "one of their own" and enabling him, regardless of the harm it does to the country, because they want to get people like Drunky McRapeface and the Stepford Wife on the supreme court

Biden doesn't have a speech impediment. Look at old videos of him. He was a quick and confident speaker, he could think on his feet. What he said was frequently complete ********, but he came up with it fast, and could keep on point.

He isn't nearly what he used to be.

This is quite plainly true, and the same applies to Trump.

I think claims about both Biden and Trump's senility is generally overstated, but both men are obviously a little slower on the draw than they used to be.

4 years is a long time for someone of such age (70's). If we keep having such elderly presidents, it's practically guaranteed we will see an example of severe senility developing during their time in office.

Trump's not senile, he's just an ignorant blowhole.

Seriously, he's no better than your grandma's facebook feed.

Sure, sure, and Hillary was supposed to fall dead day after inauguration.

Not that I do not consider age of leaders being problem, but it is quite amusing when follower of one old geriatric fart shriek and point finger at other old geriatric fart just because he is old.

A better example. Compare and contrast the treatment of Roy Moore and Al Franken by their own teams. The former is credibly accused of slumming for teen girls yet is coddled by the Rs. The latter has a pic of him jokingly 'air cupping' a sleeping women's titties and is hounded out of office by the Ds. (Yeah, I know this is a gross simplification, but the basic premise of the morality as practised is clear enough.)

Sure, the stuff people notice most, like the intense ego and blowhard ways, aren't sign of senility, it's just his ****** character.

But compare his speaking now vs old recordings from the 90's and it's pretty clear. He was always a dick, but he didn't ramble nearly as much back then.

Morality had nothing to do with any of it. Franken got pushed out because Gillibrand made a move against him in order to boost her own profile in the midst of "me too". Had Franken's replacement not been guaranteed to be another Democrat, he never would have been pushed out, and many Democrats regret that he was and blame Gillibrand for it.
